| Who is the man in the painting?

The painting is of Myron McDonald Weaver (1901-1963), the first Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at UBC. Born in Detroit and raised in the US-controlled Panama Canal Zone, he served in the US Marines from 1920 to 1921 and then was educated at Wheaton College, Illinois, the University of Chicago and Rush Medical College. He came to UBC after a long career as a teacher and administrator in the United States, culminating with a spell as Associate Dean of the University of Minnesota medical school. He was appointed in 1949, over a year before the opening of the Faculty in September 1950. His first task was to put together the core of the faculty. He sought out those who had excelled in their fields, and also had excellent teaching skills. He personally welcomed the first intake of sixty students, and personally lectured on the history of medicine. He retired due to ill health in 1956, by which time he had seen three classes graduate. The painting was given to the BMB Library by the UBC Faculty of Medicine in 2007. Links to other pages about Dr Weaver: |
