About this project

Digitized holdings from the Chung Collection include photographs, documents and ephemera from Chinese-Canadian communities in British Columbia , including educational materials such as phrase books, anti-Asian ephemera generated by white communities, and items from Chinese businesses and organizations such as restaurant menus and store catalogues. Also included is archival material from the Yip family, an early Vancouver Chinese family with many connections in the Chinese-Canadian community.

Digitized holdings from the City of Vancouver Archives consist of more than 600 letters from the Yip family and Yip Sang Ltd. fonds. The Yip family acted as unofficial postmasters for the Chinese-Canadian community, because letters addressed with Chinese characters could not be delivered by the Canadian postal system. The undelivered letters in the fonds are written in older style Chinese, dating from ca. 1903 to 1919. It is our hope that by making the letters available through the web, users from around the world can submit interpretations and translations of the letters. The digitized holdings also contain letters addressed to the Yip family and their business the Wing Sang Company (later renamed Yip Sang Ltd).

Educational institutions, teachers and students can reproduce, share electronically, exhibit, crop, translate, archive and use any content found on this website and in the associated digital collections for non-commercial purposes.
