| About VCLR |
The first Children's Literature Roundtable in Canada was established in Edmonton in the fall of 1977. A trio of enthusiasts (Ronald Jobe and Annabelle Bourgoin, Consultants with the Edmonton Public School Board, and Dianne Woodman, a bookseller) wanted to have an organization which would allow people to get together to share good children's books and to meet the Writers and Illustrators which created them. The initial speaker was Phyllis Yaffee, the First Director of the Canadian Children's Book Centre in Toronto. Three other program were held in the inaugural season. A Christmas program, sponsored by the children's book store, with music and books is a tradition which still continue today. A discussion of mystery and detective stories with a detective from the Edmonton Police Department, and a HOT session on "Books that go klunck in the night!" This was held in the furnace room of a church!
After his arrival in the Department of Language Education in the Faculty of Education (1978), Ron Jobe, shared the concept of a Roundtable with his new colleagues, and it was decided to try the concept of such a Roundtable. Wendy Sutton, Marion Ralston, and Roy Bentley were eager to launch a Vancouver Roundtable. They received enthusiastic support from Ken Haycock of the Vancouver School Board, Dwain Weese of the Richmond School Board, Blair Greenwood of the North Vancouver School Board, and Janice Douglas of the Vancouver Public Library.
