“Ronald Jobe Children’s Literature Scholarship”

Dr. Ronald Job e has devoted his professional and academic life to the promotion of Canadian children’s literature and literacy in Canada and abroad. Dr. Jobe is a professor in UBC’s Department of Language and Literacy Education and also an active, enthusiastic member of the teaching faculty of the multidisciplinary Master of Arts in Children’s Literature Program offered by the Departments of Creative Writing, English, Language and Literacy Education and the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies.

Ron, as he is familiarly known, has a remarkable talent for bringing together students, teachers, librarians, scholars, writers, illustrators, booksellers and publishers to promote children’s literature. He has worked tirelessly to help establish children’s literature roundtables across Canada. Ron is a founder and Co-Chair of the Vancouver Children’s Literature Roundtable, with over 400 members. He coordinates Serendipity, a yearly children’s literature conference.

Ron has educated generations of teachers and librarians who are now enthusiasts of Canadian children’s literature and advocates for literacy. In recognition of his dedication and commitment to children’s literature, he has received many awards in Canada, among them the prestigious Claude Aubry Award for distinguished service in children’s literature, and the Canadian Children’s Book Centre Service Award. In recognition of his excellence in teaching children’s literature, Ron received the International Reading Association’s Arbuthnot Award in 1998. He is the only recipient from outside the United States.

Ron has been a leader in many organizations devoted to literacy and to children’s literature and publishing for Canadian children. “Dr. Ron” was the first non-European President of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), a 62-nation organization devoted to the promotion of literacy and children’s books. He has served on the Board of the Canadian Children’s Book Centre and on juries for prestigious Canadian, American and International children’s book awards.

Ron is in demand as a dynamic speaker. He has given speeches in Australia, Brazil, China, Great Britain, Greece, Iceland, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, Thailand, the United States, and Venezuela. His publications, focussing on multiculturalism, translation and Canadian children’s literature, include Canadian Connections, Cultural Connections, Reluctant Readers and Info-Kids.

In consultation with Ron, the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies wishes to endow a scholarship to provide financial assistance to students enrolled in the Master of Arts in Children’s Literature Program. Tax receipts will be provided to donors. As Ron often says, “By working together, we can make a difference.”
