Kill A Watt UBC Library Project
![]()
UBC Library has teamed with the Sustainability Office in a new project to circulate Kill A Watt devices that record energy consumption of electrical equipment. By charging out the Kill A Watt, borrowers can monitor the amount of energy that appliances and other components consume. The purpose of the project is to facilitate the University’s desire to become a leader in energy conservation and sustainability by encouraging people to modify their use of technology and energy.
The Sustainability Office is providing the Kill A Watt monitors and information/troubleshooting support. The Library is serving to circulate the monitors to our borrowers. Two monitors will circulate at the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, two at Koerner and one at Woodward. More devices will be forthcoming and circulate at these three libraries.
Keep an eye out for an informative article on the project by Glenn Drexhage in the upcoming December issue of UBC Reports.
Duration of project
Due to high demand for the devices, the Kill A Watt project has been extended. Availability
The Kill A Watt devices will be available from Koerner, Woodward and the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre library branches and can be borrowed by anyone with a valid UBC library card, including community borrowers. Loan policies
The same as for a regular loan book: regular loan period, renewable and recallable. Return Policy
Return the Kill A Watt to the Library it was charged from. It should be returned to the reserve book return slot or directly to the circulation desk depending on the individual branch policy. Fines
Fines will be charged at the same rate as books, $1 per day. The maximum fines for a device will be $30. Lost or damaged devices
The cost for a damaged Kill A Watt device is $60 (this includes a $10 processing fee). If the device is lost the replacement cost will be $73, which is the cost of the device and the packaging. Troubleshooting or questions/contacts
