Exact searching can be done by:Title Search
Search by title will search the catalogue for titles that begin with the word or phrase you enter.
- You must use the exact first few words of the title, omitting leading articles in major languages such as a, an, the, le, la, les etc. Example:
- revenge of the land
You will see a list of titles displayed that match your search. Click on a title to see the brief citation for that item . Click on the brief citation to see the full record for that item. From the full record, click on any hyperlink to perform a new search on that term.

Author Search
Search by Author will search the catalogue for the name you enter. The name may be an author, editor, composer, illustrator etc.
- Type in the last name first, followed by an initial (or the whole first name, if known). Punctuation is not required. Example:
- siggins m
- siggins maggie
- Organizations or corporations can also be authors. Example:
- royal canadian mounted police
You will see a list of names displayed that match your search. Click on a name to see a list of brief citations for the items associated with that name. If there is only one name that matches your search, the citation list will be displayed. Click on a brief citation to see the full record for that item. From the full record, click on any hyperlink to perform a new search on that term.
The search looks for exact matches from left to right, and automatically truncates your search terms. This means that "anders" will find "anders, andersen, and anderson", but that "anderson" will not find "andersen."
If you are searching for an item with multiple names, or are having trouble finding the items you expect, try a keyword search. It will search the entire database for any occurence of your search term, not just for exact matches at the beginning of the name field.

Subject Search
Search by subject will search the catalogue for the words you enter, and return a list of subject headings that match your search terms.
- You must use the exact first few words of an approved subject heading from lists such as the Library of Congress Subject Headings or the National Library of Medicine Subject Headings (MeSH) etc. Please ask at the Reference Desk for assistance with subject headings. Example:
- murder saskatchewan pasqua region
A list of subject headings that match your search will be displayed. Click on a subject heading to see a list of brief citations for items associated with that heading. Click on the brief citation to see the full record for that item. From the full record, click on any hyperlink to perform a new search on that term.
If you do not know the proper subject heading, or your search returns too few items, try a keyword search.
Call Number Search
- To enter a complete call number, replace the space after the first set of digits with a period. For example:
- PS2384.M6 1930
- PS2384 (truncated)
