W. Kaye Lamb, Canadas First National Librarian
With the passing of Dr. W. Kaye Lamb in August 1999, Canada lost one of its finest academic pioneers. By championing the establishment of the National Library of Canada and contributing to the fundamental development of the National Archives, Dr. Lamb erected a framework that would link Canadas past, present, and future. Dr. Lamb was Canadas first National Librarian, serving from 1953 until his retirement in 1967. From 1948 through 1969 Dr. Lamb held the post of Dominion Archivist.
Dr. Lamb is also fondly remembered as UBCs second University Librarian, from 1940 to 1948. Recently, his daughter Mrs. Elizabeth Hawkins chose to honour his memory and achievements through the establishment of The W. Kaye Lamb Memorial Library Fund at the University of British Columbia Library.
This endowment will provide funds for acquisitions in the area of British Columbia history. Dr. Lamb was instrumental in securing the Howay-Reid Collection, now housed in UBC Librarys Rare Books and Special Collections. Dr. Lamb shared a keen interest in B.C. history with his friends, Judge F.W. Howay and Dr. Robie L. Reid.
Roch Carrier, National Librarian
Roch Carrier is an internationally renowned author and Officer of the Order of Canada. He has been active in various cultural organizations, including the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde and the Canada Council for the Arts, where he served as president from 1979 to 1981 and as director from 1994 to 1997.
In a recent interview, in which he discussed the future of the National Library, Mr. Carrier stated: "The key words will be, certainly preservation of the material preservation of the memory, but mainly access and dissemination a higher profile for the institution and to make it more accessible to the general public."
Mr. Carrier has a number of works to his credit, and has received many prizes and honours, among them the 1991 Stephen Leacock Prize for humour for Prayers of a Very Wise Child.
Roch Carrier is also known for his books for children, most notably The Hockey Sweater. In October 1999 Roch Carrier became the fourth National Librarian of Canada.
