There are nine indexes in the Wilson Database. Each is described below, and, following those descriptions are examples for the search fields and search limits.
The Wilson Applied Science & Technology Index indexes articles, product evaluations, and book reviews in over 390 leading English-language periodicals published in the U.S. and elsewhere. The database includes trade and industrial publications, journals of professional and learned societies, and specialized subject periodicals.
Subjects covered include all fields of engineering, aeronautics, chemistry, computer technology and applications, earth sciences, energy and environment, mathematics, metallurgy, and physics. ASTW also covers industries such as construction, materials, robotics, telecommunications, and transportation.
WART is a bibliographic database that cites articles from more than 285 periodicals published throughout the world. Periodical coverage includes English-language periodicals, yearbooks, and museum bulletins, as well as periodicals published in French, Italian, German, Japanese, Spanish, Dutch, and Swedish. In addition to articles, WART indexes reproductions of works of art that appear in indexed periodicals.
WBAI provides cover-to-cover indexing of over 225 of the key international English-language periodicals in the biological and agricultural sciences. While focusing nearly half its subject coverage on agriculture, WBAI also provides extensive coverage of the life sciences. Book reviews, chapters in annual reviews of research, and journal supplements are indexed in addition to articles.
Subject coverage includes: agricultural chemicals, agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, agriculture and agricultural research, animal husbandry, biochemistry, biology, biotechnology, botany, cytology, ecology, entomology, environmental science, fishery sciences, food science, forestry, genetics, horticulture, marine biology and limnology, microbiology, nutrition, physiology, plant pathology, soil science, veterinary medicine, and zoology.
WBPI indexes 345 of the key international English-language business periodicals, covering all aspects of the contemporary business world from the broad areas of accounting, taxation, foreign trade, advertising, public relations, government regulations, corporate acquisitions, insurance, communications, management, marketing, and computers, to specific industries, businesses, trades, and topics of current interest and concern.
In addition to feature articles, WBPI includes citations to book reviews, interviews, biographical sketches, new product reviews, corporate profiles, and obituaries. Letters to the editor, advertisements and articles of less than one column are not included.
The Wilson General Science Index covers 111 English language periodicals in the physical, life, and health sciences. In addition to feature articles, WGSI indexes biographical sketches, symposia, conferences, review articles, selected letters to the editor, and supplements to journals. Advertisements and meeting announcements are not included.
Wilson Humanities Index provides cover-to-cover indexing of over 350 English-language periodicals. Among the disciplines included are: archaeology and classical studies, art and photography, folklore, history, journalism and communications, language and literature, literary and political criticism, music and performing arts, philosophy, religion and theology, and related subjects.
WHUM includes citations to the following: feature articles; interviews; bibliographies; reviews of motion pictures, operas, ballets, etc.; short stories, poems, and plays; book reviews.
WILP is a bibliographic database that cites articles from more than 645 legal periodicals. Coverage includes law reviews, bar association journals, university publications, yearbooks, institutes, and government publications published in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Effective late 1993, WILP also indexes monographs in the area of jurisprudence, with an estimated 2,500 monographs to be indexed annually.
Wilson Readers' Guide Abstracts database includes citations and abstracts for articles from over 250 of the popular English language periodicals to which most libraries subscribe. Covering such general interest areas as current events, business, fashion, politics, crafts, food, education, sports, history, and science, Readers' Guide is recognized as the premier index to popular literature.
WRGA provides abstracts for periodicals beginning with September 1984. Two kinds of abstracts appear. The informative abstract is a representation of the content, scope, and complexity of the original article, and is the form used most often. The indicative abstract describes the subject of the article and is reserved for "how-to" articles, humorous essays, and densely factual material.
Book reviews, original works of fiction, short stories, and poems are indexed, but not abstracted. Advertisements and cartoons are not indexed.
Wilson Social Sciences Index includes citations to articles and book reviews in over 350 of the key international English language periodicals in the social sciences, providing accurate, up-to-date coverage of this multi-faceted, interdisciplinary field.
Comprehensive subject coverage in WSSI includes: anthropology, area studies, community health and medical care, economics, geography, gerontology, international relations, law and criminology, planning and public administration, police science and corrections, policy sciences, political science, psychiatry and psychology, social work and public welfare, sociology, urban studies, and related subjects.
