The Mini-Course consists
of six web-based modules that are designed to alternate with your in-lab activities.
You will complete the first five modules this term, and use the sixth as a springboard
for a research assignment in the second term (CHEM 123).
Modules are assigned during
weeks when there is no in-lab activity. Check your
schedule to see which module you are assigned. Each module consists
of the following sections:
| OBJECTIVES |
An overview
of the skills the module will teach you. |
| CONTENT PAGES |
The week's
lesson; these present information and research strategies. |
| SUMMARY |
A quick-reference guide
to the most important points from the content. |
| STEP-BY-STEP APPLICATIONS |
Here
is a chance to practice your newly acquired knowledge!
These walk-throughs
are set up as follows: on the first page of each one, you'll find a
link
to a start page for your search (such as the UBC Library Catalogue,
a search engine, etc.). When you click on this link, a new web browser
window will open. You will do your search in this new window, and refer
back to the first browser window for instructions and screenshots of
what your search will look like. By switching between windows, you can
attempt the search by yourself while getting guidance on how to do it.
There
are three levels of application walk-throughs: beginner, intermediate,
and advanced. Try one at a level you're comfortable with.
|
| ASSIGNMENT |
You'll
find short assignments in your lab manual to go with modules 2, 3, 4,
and 5. Each assignment is part of the lab report for the preceding week's
lab activity. You'll hand the assignment in to your TA together with
the accompanying lab report. Save these when they are returned to you
- they may come in handy in Chem 123. |
The modules
(and assignments) have been designed to be relevant to the labs you are doing
each week, so please go through them in the order they are presented on your
group's homepage and on your schedule.
