In this module, we'll
explore one by one the different forms of scientific publications you might
encounter in your research endeavours.
The most important
one for you to be familiar with is the scientific journal.
- Essentially a scientific
journal is a publication much like a magazine
where the articles deal with a particular area of science.
- Some journals feature
articles that focus on a very highly specialized
field, while others carry more general articles.
- Articles in a journal
are peer reviewed. This means that prior to publication, the journal's
editor sends the article to two referees who are experts in that area
of science.
- The referees anonymously
review the article and suggest corrections
to the author. Once these corrections are made, the article is accepted
for publication. The review process is lengthy - it usually takes
many months between submission of an article and its publication.
