Why Are Journals So Important?

Below are some reasons why journals are the most important form of scientific publication.

  • Journals are so critical to science because scientific research moves forward by building upon the research which has been performed by other scientists.
  • Therefore, it is very important that new discoveries are made known to the scientific community.
  • For example, when a chemist publishes an article in the Canadian Journal of Chemistry, he/she is contributing to the greater body of chemical knowledge.
    • Other chemists will be able to read the research findings contained in the published article and then apply this new knowledge to their research.
  • Therefore, a chemist who publishes a journal article has two very important goals in mind:
    • The first goal is to be first when it comes to publishing a new scientific discovery.
    • The second equally important goal is to share this research with the rest of the scientific community.
