Bill Backman is a retired forester who worked for Bloedel, Stewart and Welch. He has also served as president of the B.C. Forest History Association.

The collection consists of operating statements for Bloedel, Stewart and Welch Ltd., Bloedel Operation (1925-1950), Sarita River Operation (1947-1950) and Sproat Lake Operation (1942-1950).

Barbarian Press

Barbarian Press was founded in 1977 by Crispin and Jan Elsted. They both received M.A. Degrees in English at the University of British Columbia in 1975, and after a year of teaching in the English Department, they travelled to England to work toward Ph.D.s at King's College, London. The Elsteds established Barbarian Press on their return to B.C. in 1978. Settling at Steelhead, north of Mission, the Elsteds have published continuously since then, producing both commercial work (stationery, cards and other job printing) and fine presswork: illustrated monographs, miniatures, pamphlets, broadsheets and keepsakes.

The fonds consists of correspondence files including founding operations and editorial issues; project files include planning and production of books (collaborations with I. H. Finlay and illustrators Edwina Ellis and Colin Paynton), pamphlets, broadsheets, etc.; general printing files cover printed ephemera and job printing including design files and promotional and background materials; financial files include invoices and bank records.

Barclay, James Bow, 1903-1964

James Barclay was born in Gourock, Scotland. After receiving his education in Scotland he worked in Shanghai, China as an engineering assistant. In 1928 Barclay decided to join his parents in North America. Leaving China, he arrived at the port of Seattle and from there made his way to Vancouver, B.C. After working in Trail as a draughtsman for Consolidated Mining and Smelter Company of Canada, Barclay moved to Vancouver where he became a member of the Canadian Professional Engineers. Thereafter, he worked on a number of construction projects in the city, including the Burrard Street Bridge.

The fonds consists of photographs mainly pertaining to his activities in China (1900s-1920s), Oregon (1920s) and British Columbia (1930s-1950s) as well as related correspondence, memorabilia and clippings.

N.L. "Bill" Barlee, born in Grand Forks, has had a varied career as a high school teacher, writer, publisher and Minister of Small Business, Tourism, Culture and Film in British Columbia, 1991-1996. He wrote Gold Creeks and Ghost Towns, 1984. He hosted an award winning television series, "Gold Trails and Ghost Towns," which ran from 1986 to 1996 on five different networks.

The research collection consists mainly of correspondence, financial records, and legal records acquired on the activities and businesses of John Morgan Harris in Slocan and vicinity, mostly from 1893-1924. Reco Mining and Milling Co., Hotel Reco, Harris and Kelly, Star Mining and Milling Company, Norman & Company Mining and Stock Brokers and the Silver-Lead Miners Association of British Columbia were some of the companies and organizations in which Harris was involved. There are documents detailing court disputes between Star Mining versus Byron N. White and Harris versus White at various levels of the legal system to the Privy Council in England. In addition the collection contains the financial records and telegrams of the W.B. Bailey Co., 1896-1902 and the financial records of Clarence Cunningham, 1916-1919.

Barrett, David, 1930-

David Barrett led the New Democratic Party of British Columbia to victory in 1972 becoming the first NDP Premier in B.C. Born in Vancouver in 1930, he graduated from Britannia High School in 1948, received a Bachelor of Arts from Seattle University in 1953 and a Master of Social Work from St. Louis University in 1956. In 1960, Barrett joined the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation and was elected as leader of the NDP of B.C. in 1970. After the NDP were defeated in 1975, Barrett stayed on as leader until 1983. He retired from the legislature in 1984, signing a contract with radio station CJOR to do his own radio show. He left CJOR in 1987 to become involved in a number of activities such as writing an autobiography, and lecturing at universities such as Harvard and McGill. He returned to politics in 1988 when he was elected MP for the Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca district. He remained an MP until 1993 when he ran unsuccessfully for the leadership of the NDP, after which he retired from political life.

The fonds consists of records created and accumulated by David Barrett relating to his personal, political and professional life. Within the fonds there are appointment books recording information about his private and political life, records created by him in the course of creating his autobiography, records created during his political career and period as premier, and records created during David Barrett's work with the radio station, CJOR.

Owned by J.H. Todd and Sons, the Beaver Cannery was constructed in 1905 at Rivers Inlet, B.C. in a small bay off Schooner Passage in the winter of 1905/06.

The fonds consists of photocopied pages from time book (1905/06), fisherman's catch records (1933-1938) and journals (1931-1939).

Belcher family

Sir Edward Belcher (1799-1877) was born in Halifax and, in 1812, joined the Royal Navy where he gained recognition as a surveyor. He was knighted in 1843 for his success in surveying the west coast of America. From 1852 to 1854, he commanded an expedition in search of Sir John Franklin. In 1872 Belcher attained the rank of admiral.

The fonds consists of personal documents, journals, an order book, court papers, correspondence, drawings and miscellany (1821-1865). Series within the subgroups relating to other family members are arranged by incoming and outgoing correspondence. This fonds is built around Edward Belcher's material and, as a result, the material has been arranged with the other eight members of the Belcher family as sub-groups to the main body of material.

Bell-Irving Insurance Agencies

H. Bell-Irving and Company was established in Vancouver in 1895 as Managing and Selling Agents for the Anglo British Columbia Packing Company. In 1908, the Company created an Insurance Department to underwrite insurance for its canneries and fishing boats and in 1929 it was established as a separate business under the name Bell-Irving Insurance Ltd. The firm purchased Nairn Insurance Agencies in 1948 and Crossley Insurance Agencies in 1949. Bell-Irving Insurance Agencies' functions included insurance, real estate, mortgages, automobile financing and property management. The company ceased operation in 1972.

The fonds consists of financial records, insurance policy records and ledgers arranged in three sub-groups: Bell-Irving Insurance Agencies Ltd., Crossley Insurance Agencies and Nairn Insurance Agencies.

Henry Bell-Irving came to Granville in 1885. He was instrumental in founding the Anglo-British Insurance Agencies. Bell-Irving was active in the fishing industry through his association with the Anglo-British Columbia Packing Company.

The fonds consists of photocopies of outgoing letters (1882-1885) and letter press copybook (1888). Also included are microfilm copies of diaries, deed books and address books (1887-1930).

Thomas Rodney Berger, a Canadian lawyer, politician, judge, and author, was born March 23, 1933, in Victoria , British Columbia , Canada , the son of Maurice Theodore Berger and Nettie Elsie Perle McDonald. Berger received the Order of Canada in 1990, and was recognized with honorary degrees from several universities for his contributions championing aboriginal peoples of Canada .

The fonds consists of thirteen series of records pertaining to the activities of Thomas Berger, including two series of files arranged with reference to file classification schemes, related to party politics and to the Sardar Sarovar Projects Independent Review, as well as eleven series of subject files generally arranged alphabetically, related to the Royal Commission on Family and Children's Law, the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Inquiry, the Advisory Commission on Indian and Inuit Health Consultation, a proposed United Nations Environmental Programme inquiry on whales and whaling, Japanese Canadians' redress, the Alaska Native Review Commission, the Canadian Judicial Council and its investigation concerning Berger, the University of British Columbia President's Ad Hoc Committee on British Columbia Native Indian People and Communities, the Simon Fraser University J. S. Woodsworth Chair committee, speeches given by Berger (arranged by event in subseries of two to seven year periodic groups), and subject files related to aboriginal peoples, the Arctic and the north in general. The arrangement by the records' creator of series and file order within series has been respected. Several series contain files housed in multiple folders, indicated by notes where applicable. An addendum to the fonds consists of case files created by Thomas Berger during his activities as a lawyer including the Calder v. Attorney General of British Columbia land rights case heard in the Supreme Court of BC in 1969, the BC Court of Appeal in 1970 and the Supreme Court of Canada in 1973. The case files were used by him when he wrote his autobiography, One Man's Justice: A Life in the Law.

Elaine Bernard assembled the collection while researching The Long Distance Feeling: A History of the Telecommunications Worker's Union.

The collection consists of records covering the period from the granting of the Victoria and Esquimalt Telephone Company charter in 1880 to 1982 when B.C. Telephone Company employees were laid off without notice. It includes union minutes, arbitration details, correspondence, press clippings, constitutions, agreements, and financial reports relating to the Telecommunications Workers Union of B.C.

Olive Allen Biller (nee Allen) was born on October 17, 1879 in Ormskirk, England, the youngest of seven children. Scrapbooks from early family vacations show Allen’s artistic and creative beginnings through illustrations, photographs, plays and poems. Before immigrating to Canada, Allen’s illustrations were published in at least ten books, and she wrote and illustrated stories for children’s annuals and magazines such as Blackie’s and Girl’s Realm. In 1912, Allen immigrated to Qu’Appelle Valley, Saskatchewan. She also lived for a time on James Island, near Victoria, BC, where she was a correspondent for the Sidney Review. A lack of opportunities for illustrating turned Allen Biller toward landscape painting, and she showed with the Vancouver Island Arts and Crafts Society and later at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

The collection reflects Allen’s early life in England as well as her later artistic works from her time in Canada. The records also document her day-to-day and family life, in both England and Canada. Textual records include journals and clippings, and graphic material includes drawings, paintings, and photographs. The collection is divided into two series: Journals and Artwork.

Mary Bishop was recognized as one of British Columbia's major advocates for planned parenthood. She competed a M.A. thesis entitled, "From 'Left'to 'Right': A perspective on the role of family planning in the West and in South Asia (UBC, 1971).

Blades, Ann

Ann Blades was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, and has spent most of her life in Vancouver. As a child, she attended several schools, including one in England, where she was encouraged to paint at age eleven. Subsequently, she continued to paint with watercolours with no formal art training. After obtaining a teaching certificate from the University of British Columbia, she taught at Mile 18 in northeastern British Columbia, where she wrote and illustrated her first book, Mary of Mile 18 in 1971. This book won Blades a Canadian Library Association Book of the Year for Children award. In 1978, A Salmon for Simon, written by Betty Waterton, and illustrated by Blades, was published, earning Blades the Canada Council's Children's Literature Prize for Illustration and the Amelia Francis Howard-Gibbon Illustrator's Award. Although she trained as a registered nurse in the mid-1970s, Blades has worked as an illustrator of children's books and an artist full-time since 1980, winning the Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Canadian Picture Book Award in 1986.

Fonds consists of rough and final drawings, completed and uncompleted paintings, correspondence, manuscripts, reviews, sales and royalty statements, contracts, notes, and research material relating to Blades' illustration of the books A Salmon for Simon, Pettranella, Ida and the Wool Smugglers, A Dog Came, Too, A Ride for Martha, Six Darn Cows, Anna's Pet, Jacques the Woodcutter, and The Singing Basket. Includes also copies of a few of these books.

Patricia Blondal was born in Souris, Manitoba. She attended the University of Manitoba in the early 1940s and then became a broadcaster in Winnipeg upon her graduation. Blondal also travelled throughout Canada and spent a year in England. She married Harold Blondal in 1946 and spent the 1950s living with her husband and children in Montreal. Blondal wrote short stories, two novels and one mystery novel which remains unpublished.

The fonds consists of both personal and business correspondence from Harold Blondal, from Nathanial Jenkins (her father), as well as from magazines, publishers and the C.B.C. The manuscripts include an untitled, unpublished mystery novel and two versions of her novel "A Candle to Light the Sun" and manuscripts for broadcasts.

Borden, Robert Laird, Sir, 1854-1937

Robert Laird Borden was born in Grand Pr? Nova Scotia in 1854. Educated in his home province, Borden accepted a teaching position in New Jersey at age 19. He returned to Nova Scotia two years later and began his career in law, articling with a firm in Halifax, and was called to the Bar in 1878. Borden eventually entered politics, and was first elected to the House of Commons in 1896. In 1901 he won the leadership of the Conservative Party and was the leader of the Official Opposition until 1911, when his party was elected and he became Prime Minister. Borden saw Canada through World War One, and headed the coalition of pro-conscription Conservative and Liberal politicians known as the Union Government between 1917 and 1920. Borden resigned from the office of the Prime Minister in 1920. He remained active in business concerns after his retirement from politics, heading both Crown Life Insurance and Barclay’s Bank (Canada). He was also an author, and the president of the Canadian Historical Association. Robert L. Borden died on June 10, 1937 in Ottawa, Ontario.

The fonds consists of photocopies of letters, reports, memorandums, maps and telegrams created and received by Robert L. Borden in his capacity as the Prime Minister of Canada. The fonds has been divided into four series: Politics, Railway Systems and Policies, Union Government and World War One.

Nan Bourgon was a pioneer settler in the Bulkley Valley.

The fonds consists of manuscript copies of "Education in the Bulkley Valley" and "University Extension School of the '30's", both written in the 1930s. The fonds also includes a transcript of her memoirs about her life in the Bulkley Valley, 1914-1962. Relating mainly to pioneers in the Aldermere, Telkwa, Round Lake, and Hubert areas of B.C., the manuscript served as a regional gazetteer of local history and has been published as Rubber Boots for Dancing.

George Bowering was born in Osoyoos, British Columbia. He attended Victoria College and then the University of British Columbia, where he obtained his B.A. in 1960, then his M.A. in 1963. He also attended the University of Western Ontario from 1966-1967. Bowering worked at a variety of jobs: aerial photographer with the R.C.A.F. (1954-1957), fruit-picker, and editor of and contributor to magazines in Canada and the United States. Bowering was writer-in-residence and lecturer at Sir George Williams University (1967-1971) and a member of the Department of English at Simon Fraser University.

The fonds consists of material pertaining to Bowering's private and professional life. Included are thirteen pages of draft typed and handwritten poetry, as well as 44 incoming letters and sixteen postcards (1962-1970) from Earle Birney.

John Boyd was a rancher who lived in the Cariboo District at the turn of the century. He was the owner of Cottonwood House and Cold Springs House, combined ranches and roadhouses located in the Cariboo.

The fonds consists of receipts, cashbooks, and daybooks of Cottonwood House and Cold Spring House kept by John Boyd, covering the period 1885-1901.

Doreen Braverman was active politically with the British Columbia Liberal Party, beginning in the provincial riding of Vancouver-Point Grey in the 1960s. She was on the campaign committee of Garde Gardom and Pat McGeer in Vancouver-Point Grey in 1966 and 1969 respectively. She was elected as the President of the British Columbia Liberal Party in 1973 and ran unsuccessfully as the Liberal candidate for Vancouver Point-Grey in the 1986 provincial election.

The fonds consists of correspondence and subject files relating to the activities of the British Columbia Liberal Party at both the provincial and federal levels and concerning the provincial riding of Vancouver-Point Grey and the federal riding of Vancouver-Quadra.

Thomas Brayshaw was born in Yorkshire, England and moved to Canada in the early 1900s. He was a well-known sport fisherman and devoted most of his adult life to catching, studying and drawing of fish. He also illustrated several of Roderick Haig-Brown's books. Brayshaw achieved recognition for his wooden fish carvings. He spent his retirement in Hope, B.C. after growing fruit in the Okanagan between the wars.

The fonds consists of fishing diaries (1932-1964) and correspondence, manuscripts, subject files, maps, photographs, clippings and printed material (1907-1967).

British Columbia Academy of Science

Founded in 1909, the British Columbia Academy of Science promoted original scientific research, published papers reporting research results and coordinated and sponsored meetings to further develop interest in the sciences throughout B.C. Through a modest award system, the Academy provided support to scientific research in B.C. at the high school and post-secondary levels. In 1947 the Academy organized its first annual science conference; these conferences continued for fourteen years. In 1963 the Academy was legally disbanded as a result of declining financial and membership support. It played an important formative role in the development of the scientific community in the province. Many of the province's most influential scientists were connected with the Academy during its history.

The fonds consists of financial records, minutes, agendas, notices and programs, scientific papers, election and membership records, conference records and extensive correspondence files.

The British Columbia Camping Association was established by Gertrude Moore in 1940. An affiliate of the Canadian Camping Association, the B.C.C.A. embarked on activities to fulfill its constitutional objective of setting camping standards and safeguards. Accreditation services for campsites, counsellor training and directory publication have been primary services of the association, which has worked in conjunction with the United Way and other charitable organizations.

The fonds consists of minute books, correspondence, photographs, newsletters, historical accounts, printed material and ephemera which reflect the Association's mandate to help camp leaders coordinate camping work in the province, establish standards and safeguards for camping and to stimulate community interest in the activity.

In 1956, The British Columbia Dieticians Association (BCDA) registered under the “Societies Act.” The BCDA organized to seek legal recognition for Dieticians, establish professional status for Dieticians, and monitor the practice of dietetics in British Columbia. The Association provided a variety of services for the province of British Columbia such as training and demonstrations in health education. In 1981, the BCDA changed its name to the British Columbia Dieticians and Nutritionists Association (BCDNA).

The British Columbia Electric Railway Company was formed in 1897 through the amalgamation of a number of electric street railways and electric power facilities in Vancouver, Victoria and New Westminster. The B.C.E.R. operated numerous subsidiary companies to provide streetcar and electric services. In 1926 a corporate reorganization resulted in the establishment of a new holding company, British Columbia Electric Power and Gas Company.

The fonds consists principally of bound and filed correspondence of the Company (1896-1914), early minute books and accounting records of the B.C.E.R. and related companies, as well as scrapbooks and clippings which reflect the growth and diversity of the Company. Also included is a valuable collection of 650 maps, diagrams, and engineering and architectural plans.

The original B.C. Federation of Labour was founded in Vancouver in 1910 but disbanded in 1920. Re-established in 1944, it became affiliated with the Canadian Congress of Labour and consisted of industrial unions. Following an amalgamation of industrial and trade unions, the founding convention of the united B.C. Federationof Labour (C.L.C.) occurred in 1956.

The fonds consists of research files compiled during the writing of Paul Phillip's No Power Greater: A Century of Labour in British Columbia, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, political education material, history questionnaires and minutes of the Federation and affiliated associations. Five subsequent accessions have resulted in the deposit of office files, financial records, briefs, convention proceedings, speeches, memoranda, photographs and sound recordings reflecting the wide scope of activity and interest pursued by the Federation.

The Association's main activities include promotion, financial support for and participation in lawn bowling competitions at the provincial and national levels. In these capacities, it is affiliated with several lawn bowling associations in British Columbia, and with the Canadian Lawn Bowling Association, the Canadian Lawn Bowling Association, the Canadian Lawn Bowling Council, the Canadian Ladies Bowling Council and the Lawn Bowls of Canada.

The fonds consists of correspondence, minutes, financial records, constitutions and by-laws, reports, lists, memoranda, publications and miscellanea. The records include material from the British Columbia Lawn Bowling Association, the British Columbia Ladies Lawn Bowling Association (and its predecessor the Dogwood Lawn Bowling Association) and the Ladies' Lawn Bowling Association of British Columbia. In 1902 the British Columbia Packer's Association of New Jersey was organized by Henry Doyle and Aemilius Jarvis through the consolidation of some forty-two B.C. salmon canneries. The Association was re-incorporated under the British Columbia Packers Act in 1910. Four years later its name was changed to the British Columbia Fishing and Packing Company Ltd. After amalgamating with Gosse Packing Company Ltd. in 1928, the company became B.C. Packers Ltd.

The fonds consists of fifty printer's blocks for producing lithograph salmon tin labels and approximately 100 plastic cards used for advertising fish products. Also included are miscellaneous items such as the Roll of Honour of the British Columbia Canning Company listing men in service during World War I, Fraser River charts (ca. 1929-1947), a sample of receipts for tram passes to B.C., and a framed sheet describing the history of the Bella Coola camp.

The British Columbia Peace Council, established in 1949, was affiliated with the Canadian Peace Congress and through the Congress had strong ties to the World Peace Council. Its mandate was to support actively the movement for universal peace and security. B.C. Peace Council activities included letter writing campaigns, public awareness rallies, delegations to Victoria and the presentation of briefs to the Legislative Assembly of B.C. Owing to the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, its activities decreased and the Council was disbanded in 1994.

The fonds consists of office files, log books, minutes, posters and buttons. The office files consist mainly of correspondence, including that with the Canadian Peace Congress and the World Peace Council, and printed material.

Brown, Audrey Alexandra, 1904-

Poet Audrey Alexandra Brown was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia in 1904. In 1948 Brown won the Lorne Pierce Medal for her contribution to Canadian literature. Brown also published The Log of a Lame Duck (1936), which is a journal that Brown kept while in hospital with rheumatic fever.

The fonds consists primarily of information about Audrey Brown's grandfather, James Miller Brown (1830-1926). Included is a thirteen-page typed reminiscence about James Miller Brown, as well as an envelope with poetry written on it.

Brown, Garth, 1942-1987

Garth Brown a founding member of the N.D.P., ran as a candidate for Point Grey in 1966 and was active in TEAM campaigns from 1968 to 1972. He chaired the NDP Labour Policy Committee (1973-1979) and was a campaign chairman in 1981-1982 for Vancouver/Little Mountain. Brown worked at the Eburne Sawmill as Plant Chairman and headed the Plant Committee through most of the 1970s, and was an active committee member in the 1980s. As Regional Co-ordinator of the LESC/CLC (1979-1982), Brown was at the centre of labour education in B.C., co-ordinating C.L.C. programs and advising other organizations.

Executive Committee, the Labour Policy Committee, Vancouver civic politics, labour education, Canadian Labour Congress, International Woodworkers of America and Brown's work at the Eburne Sawmill.

Rosemary Brown is remembered for her empowering speeches that inspired all who listened, but even more so for her contribution to Canadian politics, feminism, human rights, and international development. Rosemary was born in Jamaica on June 17, 1930. She moved to Canada in 1950 to attend McGill University where she obtained an undergraduate degree in Women’s Studies. In 1955, she relocated to British Columbia, where is earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of British Columbia and married Dr. William Brown after which she began a family. Drawn to feminism and the peace movement, Rosemary established the Vancouver Status of Women. In 1972, she became a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in the riding of Vancouver-Burrard and thus became the first Black woman elected to the B.C. legislature, where she served as a MLA for 14 years until 1986 when she retired from politics. In 1975, she sought the federal leadership of the New Democratic Party and lost to Ed Broadbent by a matter of 4 votes. As a MLA for B.C., Rosemary promoted equality and human rights. In her political campaigns she fought for the elimination of sexism in textbooks, against discrimination, and for the equality of women, as well as legislation on issues such as affirmative action and laws that protected rape victims. After leaving politics in 1986, Rosemary became the Ruth Wynn Woodward Endowed Professor at Simon Fraser University in Women’s Studies. In 1988, Brown became CEO for MATCH International, an international development agency. Following this, she served as the organization’s Special Ambassador and then President. Between 1993 and 1996, Rosemary served as Chief Commissioner of the Ontario Human Rights Commission. Over her career, significant honors for Rosemary included earning many honorary doctorates from many Canadian universities including the University of Toronto, Dalhousie, and the University of Victoria, as well as being the 1995 recipient of the Order of British Columbia.

The fonds consist of correspondence, speeches, research notes, and articles on various issues, such as discrimination, inequality of women, affirmative action, and sexual assault. Bruce, Malcolm, 1909-1967

Born in Prince Edward Island, Malcolm Bruce became an early member of the Canadian Socialist Party. Dissatisfied with what he believed to be the Socialists' laxness in revolutionary ideology, he co-founded the Revolutionary Worker's Party. Jailed for his association with an American criminal and then living in the Soviet Union as a Communist, Bruce later returned to Canada.

The fonds consists of minutes, correspondence, speeches and printed material of the Political Committee of the Labour Progressive Party (1957-1966) with various records relating to the League for Socialist Action, Revolutionary Worker's Party of America, Spartacus League, Socialist Workers Party, Canadian Socialist Educational League and American Committee for the 4th International.

Brunswick Cannery Company (Canoe Pass, B.C.)

The Brunswick Canning Company constructed three Brunswick Canneries; two on the Fraser River in 1893 and the third at Rivers Inlet in 1897. In 1903 the canneries were sold to the British Columbia Packer's Association. At that time the operations of Brunswick Cannery No. 1 at Steveston were amalgamated with the adjoining Imperial Cannery, while the Rivers Inlet cannery remained operational until 1930. The Brunswick Cannery at Canoe Pass canned salmon until 1930 when it became a fish camp for Imperial Canning.

The fonds consists of the records of the Brunswick Cannery located at Canoe Pass (1900-1928). It consists of financial records, most notably invoices and receipts from various merchants in the area of the cannery. These records provide some information about the goods and services required by the early canneries and also indicate the costs of such items. The fonds also includes some material from the Anglo American Cannery Company (1896-1913).

Ewing Buchan compiled Buchan's Exchange Tables which were used in the conversion of sterling into dollars and cents and vice versa.

The fonds consists of a bound volume of 35 letters to Ewing Buchan from dealers in the sterling exchange stating their pleasure or criticism with the sample sheet sent to them about a new edition of Buchan's Exchange Tables. Correspondence comprises letters sent from banking institutions and brokerage firms in Toronto, New York, Montreal, Yarmouth, Halifax, Hamilton and Windsor, N.S.

Bugnet, Georges, 1879-1981

Georges Bugnet was born in 1879 at Chalon-sur-Sa?ne, Burgandy, France. He was educated at the Universit¨¦ du Dijon and the Sorbonne before leaving his native country for Canada in 1904. He and his wife arrived first in Saint-Boniface, Manitoba, relocating one year later to St. Albert, Alberta. In 1906 they moved to Lac Majeau, the location of their homestead north of Edmonton. Bugnet fathered nine children and as a result became heavily involved in educational programming in northern Alberta, serving as a secretary of the Rich Valley School District, and as a school trustee at Lac Ste Anne. Bugnet was interested in botany, and experimented with plants that were hardy enough to survive in the northern Alberta climate where he lived. He developed the Lagoda Pine, and the Th¨¦r¨¨se Bugnet rose, which was named after his sister. He was later recognized his skills in horticulture, and was honoured in 1966 by the provincial government of Alberta, who christened a forest reserve in his name (the Bugnet Plantation Historical Site). Georges Bugnet is considered one of the premier French writers of Western Canada. He published four novels, as well as a number of poems, short stories, and essays. His best known work is the novel La For¨ºt (1935) trans. The Forest (1976), which is hailed as one of the earliest examples of realism in Canadian literature. It reflected his fascination with life in the forest, and described the impact that such an atmosphere can have on human behaviour. He also wrote under the pseudonym Henri Doutremont. For five years between 1924 and 1929 Bugnet also edited his province's French language newspaper, l'Union, and was awarded an honourary doctorate in 1978 by the University of Alberta. Georges Bugnet died in 1981, at the age of 101 years.

Reginald Bullock (1905-1979) was a boilermaker by trade and worked at Wallace Shipyards and Burrard Drydocks in Vancouver. He was active in his own union and with various political parties espousing the socialist cause including the C.C.F., the League for Socialist Action, and the Socialist Workers Party. Bullock was expelled from the N.D.P. in the 1960s. Ruth Bullock (1909-1994) met her husband in 1938. She was active in the socialist movement and human rights. Heather McLeod wrote a thesis about her at Simon Fraser University entitled "Not Another God-Damned Housewife: Ruth Bullock, the 'Women Question' and Canadian Trotskyism" (1993).

The fonds consists of subject files, posters, photographs and pamphlets relating to the activities of the Revolutionary Workers League and its predecessors the League for Social Action, Socialist Educational League and the Revolutionary Workers Party. Research and subject files contain information on unions and the labour movement.

Burch, Gerry

Burch worked for British Columbia Forest Products for most of his career. He was appointed Chief Forester in 1968, and Vice President of Timberlands and Forestry in 1976. He was also active in professional associations, serving for a time as President of the Canadian Institute of Forestry. Burch has been awarded with such distinctions as the Distinguished Forester Award and the Achievement Award from the Canadian Institute of Forestry. After retirement from BC Forest Products in 1988, Burch remained active in forestry as a consultant for Stewart & Ewing Ltd., as an adjunct faculty member at UBC in the faculty of forestry, and by collecting research, writing papers and giving speeches.

Many of the records in this fonds were used in relation to Burch’s autobiography. These records include genealogical research materials, photographs, educational certificates, navy service records, and textual documentation of his career and interests in forestry. It also reflects other projects undertaken by Burch, such as the Working Forest publication, a history of South Vancouver Island, as well as papers, research, correspondence, and speeches.

Burge, Alice Maud

Alice Maud Jones (1882-1948) was born in Great Britain and married James McKay Burge in 1903. After employment in South Africa, England, Rossland, and Vancouver, James Burge purchased the Cariboo Ranch at Gray Creek on Kootenay Lake and moved there in the early twenties where he combined managing the family farm with fulltime work as an assistant ranger for the B.C. Forest Service until his death in a car accident in 1934. His wife, Alice Maud continued to live on the farmily farm and raise their five children on her beloved Kootenay Lake property.

The fonds consists of the diary entries of Alice Maud Burge from January 1, 1931 - November 14, 1948. They contain the record of a remarkable women whose resourcefulness, affection and good humour sustained her family thorugh difficult times. As well, her daily record, thoughts and observations offer a window on family and community life in the West Kootenays.

Burnett, Dorothy, 1907-1992

Dorothy Burnett graduated from the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts with a diploma in 1930, took post graduate studies at the California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland, and, later studied with the outstanding artists and bookbinders, Herbert and Peter Fahey, in their private studio in San Francisco. Returning from California, she set up her own studio “three flights up” over the old Dunsmuir Street Imperial Bank Building with a friend, the potter, Frances Gatewood. Subsequently she worked out of her family home on Angus Drive, accepting special orders for the fine binding of family bibles, commemorative books, albums, old volumes and first editions – such books were cherished, loved and honoured by their owners.

Miss Burnett’s work has been shown many times. Among the earliest exhibitions, dating back to the 1930’s, were those annual displays put on by the Graduates’ Association of the Vancouver School of Art. She was also included in “20th Century Bookbinding,” held at the Art Gallery of Hamilton in 1982.

Burpee, Lawrence Johnstone

Burpee is remembered for his contributions to Canadiana as a historian, a librarian, and a writer. He served as chief librarian of the Carnegie Public Library in Ottawa, from 1905 to 1912. The fonds consist of incoming and outgoing letters mainly to Burpee’s daughter, Ruth Lowe the wife of Rev. John Lowe, copies of Burpee’s passports, published and unpublished works by Burpee, and a collection of autographs that Burpee had accumulated during his tenure as Ottawa’s chief librarian.

Burton, Jean, 1905-1952

Jean Burton was born in Saskatchewan and majored in history at the University of British Columbia, completing her B.A. in 1924 at the age of nineteen. In 1928 she took her M.A. in economics at the University of Alberta. From an early age Burton was interested in writing, at first short stories in magazines, then later two plays, Left Turn and Prelude (1933). In 1941, Burton wrote her first biography, Sir Richard Burton's Wife, which started her upon her non fiction writing career.

The fonds consists of business correspondence (1927-1943), legal documents, a playbill and the script for Left Turn, a handwritten article on Western Canadian Universities for the Canadian Forum (1930), and assorted clippings. It also includes five scrapbooks.

Butler, Richard
Richard Butler fonds. 1934-1979.

Richard Butler was a Master of Arts candidate in the Department of English at the University of Victoria in the mid-1970s. When his Master's thesis proposal, a bibliography of works by Roderick Haig-Brown, was not accepted, Butler continued to pursue the publication of the bibliography outside of his M.A. program. He later directed his efforts towards the preparation of a biography of Haig-Brown. Butler was in correspondence with both Ann and Valerie Haig-Brown in the mid- to late 1970s and received their active assistance in the accumulation of material for the biography. There is no indication that Butler published either the bibliography or the biography.

The fonds consists of material created and compiled by Butler in the course of his research for the Roderick Haig-Brown bibliography and biography projects. Includes correspondence, manuscripts, including an unpublished manuscript of two chapters of an unfinished book by Haig-Brown, subject files, copies of publishers' ledgers for various books written by Haig-Brown, and printed materials pertaining to Haig-Brown.

Buttle, John J.T., 1838-1908
John Buttle fonds. - 1865-1867.

John Buttle was born in London, England. He came to Canada in 1858 as a naturalist with the Royal Engineers under Sir William Cooker to help settle the boundary dispute between Canada and the United States. With the boundary line established by 1862, the men were discharged. In 1862 Buttle joined the party that surveyed a wagon road from Bute Lake toward the Cariboo. In 1864 Buttle became part of the Vancouver Island Exploring Expedition whose primary goal was to discover a paying gold field, and incidently to explore the Island.

The fonds consists of correspondence with the Colonial Secretary's Office (1865-1867), a newspaper clipping and undated biographical notes.
