Born in London, England, in 1926, Anthony Gargrave came to Canada in 1940 to live with his brother, Bert Gargrave, and attend school in Vancouver. He represented the provincial riding of Mackenzie as a CCF and NDP member of the Legislative Assembly from 1952-1966. After retiring from the legislature, he continued his career as a lawyer.

The fonds consists mainly of subject files created by Anthony Gargrave in his work as a CCF MLA for the riding of Mackenzie, British Columbia, 1952-1958. Some of the subject areas include forestry, fishing, parks, education, municipal affairs, and Indian affairs.

George Gee, an electrician, jointed the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Vancouver Local 213, in 1939, served as a business agent of Local 213, 1946-1955, and was expelled from that union in 1955 owing to his political affiliation. His attempts for re-instatement failed and he found employment elsewhere until his retirement in 1974.

The fonds consists of correspondence, financial records, legal documents, subject files, and printed material relating mainly to the union activities of George Gee as a business agent for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Vancouver Local 213, his expulsion from the union by an international representative of the union, and his attempts to be re-instated.

The Georgia Straight was founded in Vancouver in 1967 as an underground press to explore issues not examined in mainstream newspapers, such as sexual freedom, police brutality, and the youth culture of the 1960s and early 1970s. The newspaper ceased publication in 1979 but was revived in 1981 in a different format.

The fonds consists of photographs and negatives from the Georgia Straight newspaper photograph files, depicting demonstrations, conflicts, picnics, concerts, musicians, celebrities and other events and individuals.

The office of the German Consulate General was established in Montreal, Quebec in 1909. In 1937 the office was moved to Ottawa, but a German consulate remained in Montreal to handle commercial matters.

The fonds consists of the correspondence, reports, and memoranda (1935-1939) of the Consul General. Also included are Montreal office papers dating from 1919 and a few original documents from the Vancouver Consulate (1909-1911).

Graham, Donald

Donald Graham came to British Columbia in 1874 and settled in the Okanagan Valley. His diary chronicles his work as a driver of a pack-train, serving with the government survey party for the right of way that was to become the Canadian Pacific Railway. Graham held a series of public offices in the Okanagan.

The fonds consists of a handwritten diary and reminiscences by Donald Graham (1876).

The Greater Vancouver Water District was incorporated by the BC Legislature in 1924 and began its operatons in January, 1926. Its purpose was to supply water to Vancouver, Point Grey and South Vancouver with provisions for other municipalities to join.

The fonds consists of a bound scrapbook with press cuttings of G.V.W.D. calls to tender (1957-1975). The clippings record the various projects and staff members associated with the department.

Born in Toronto, Lily (Steinman) Greene graduated as a stenographer in 1932 and throughout her career was involved in the union movement and, as a secretary to Tom McEwen-- the Communist Party of Canada. She is a charter member of the Ontario Voice of Women. During the Vietnam War she was involved in aid for Vietnamese children in the form of a knitting project.

The fonds consists of 171 letters from Tom McEwen, a leader of the Communist Party of Canada,to Lily Greene, 1944-1976, as well as photographs and an audio cassette. The letters are mainly of a personal nature, but many contain discussions of, or references to issues important to the Communist Party of Canada and elsewhere.

Greenlee, Barney B.

Barney Greenlee worked as a miner and a mining engineer before he became general manager of the Britannia mining operation after Anaconda Company (Canada) purchased the mine from New York Howe Sound Company in 1962. He oversaw operations during the 1964 International Union of Mine Mill and Smelter Workers strike.

The fonds consists of photocopied clippings from the Britannia Beach strike (1964), five collective bargaining agreements between the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers and the Anaconda Company (1965-1972), a Britannia Beach Newsletter (December, 1970), transcript of Olive Baxter's Memories of Britannia Beach, typescript of a foreword for a proposed book about Britannia Beach by Barney Greenlee and letters relating to industrial relations and Britannia Beach history.

Gulf of Georgia Cannery
Gulf of Georgia Cannery fonds. - 1899-1977.

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery was established by the Gulf of Georgia Canning Company in Steveston in 1894. By 1897 the cannery operated two production lines and ranked as the second largest cannery in British Columbia. In 1902 canning operations expanded to three canning lines. In 1929 canning operations ceased temporarily and the cannery was used as a net loft and gear locker. From 1943 to 1947, Gulf of Georgia canned herring; then after 1947 it was used for seine and gillnet lofts. In 1978 the Gulf of Georgia Cannery was designated as a national historic site, representing West Coast fisheries.

The fonds consists manly of plans (mss. and photocopied) pertaining to the Gulf of George Cannery, Reduction Plant, and machinery of the plant. The fonds also include financial records of the cannery, 1939, and two can labels, n.d.
