J.H. Todd and Sons Company fonds. - 1910-1954.

Born in 1827 in Brampton, Ontario, Jacob Hunter Todd came to
Victoria, B.C. in the
early 1860s. Todd later went to the Cariboo where he travelled to
mining camps selling
sundries. In 1872 he returned to Victoria and there entered into a
partnership with his son
Charles to operate a general store. The company expanded into the
salmon industry with the
construction of the Richmond (1882) and Beaver (1889) Canneries on
the Fraser River. It later
acquired the Inverness Cannery located on the Skeena River. A new
company was formed after
a voluntary liquidation in 1931. Control of the company was assumed
by B.C. Packers Ltd. and
the Canadian Fishing Company in 1954. It continued to operate a
cannery at Klemtu and fish
camps on the Skeena River, Fraser River and at Sooke under the Todd
name until it ceased to
exist as a separate entity after 1969.
The fonds consists of correspondence (1916-1952) and legal
records (1910-1952)
pertaining to the fishing operations of J.H. Todd and Sons, Ltd.
These include records of
subsidiary companies: Klemtu Cannery Ltd. (1927-1938), Provincial
Cannery Company Ltd.
(1917-1939), Sooke Harbour Fishing and Packing Company (1937-1953),
and Western Fishing
Company (1945-1950), relating to their fishing operations. There
are also pilot diaries, payroll
sheets, ledgers, plans and blueprints.

Jankola, Beth, 1936-

Beth Jankola is a British Columbia poet whose work has
appeared in magazines and
books. In 1975 she won the Bliss Carman Award at the Banff School
of Arts. She has performed
readings on C.B.C. radio, as well as in high schools, art
galleries, libraries and on television.
The fonds consists of publications (1972-1981), readings
(1975-1979), draft manuscripts,
correspondence (1973-1981), journals (1972-1975), a scrapbook
(1978), subject files and audio
tapes. The fonds also includes photographs pertaining to Jankola's
life and career and a
sub-fonds relating to Hester Browne.

Japanese Canadian History Preservation Committee, Oral History Project fonds.

Formed under the auspices of the Greater Vancouver Japanese Canadian Citizens'
Association, the Japanese Canadian History Preservation Committee sponsored an
oral history project in 1985. The project was undertaken in order to more fully
understand and chronicle the early experiences of Japanese Canadians.
The fonds consists of 134 cassette tapes of 91 interviews
with Japanese Canadians and
two bound volumes containing an index to individuals interviewed,
data sheets and consent
forms for use of the material.

Jenkins, Janet, 1935-1966
Janet Jenkins fonds. - 1935-1965, 1991.

Janet Jenkins (nee Brown) was born in Worcester, England. She
graduated from
Whitelands College in London in 1957. In 1956 she married Trevor
Jenkins. They came to
Canada in 1957 and settled in British Columbia. Jenkins taught at
schools in Prince George,
Vancouver and on Vancouver Island.
The fonds consists of diaries, photographs, and
correspondence of Janet Jenkins. The
photographs parallel the diaries and correspondence in documenting
her life. Also included is
a postscript to the diaries written by her husband, Trevor Jenkins
in 1991.

Eustace Alvanley Jenns was both a poet and a Vancouver
barrister. By 1887 he had
joined the Vancouver law firm of Corbould and McCall.
The fonds consists of correspondence, relating both to
personal matters and his poetry
(1910-1930), articles of incorporation for the Rope and Twine
Company (1890), handwritten
and typed manuscripts of poetry and newspaper clippings.
John Howard Society of British Columbia. Nanaimo Area Council
John Howard Society of British Columbia, Nanaimo Area Council fonds. - 1976-1984.

The John Howard Society of British Columbia was initially established in Vancouver in 1931 becoming the first John Howard Society in Canada. The objects of the Society as outlined in its Constitution (1932) were to seek to remove conditions wich lead persons into crime, to befriend the first offender, and to help discharged and parfoled men and women to re-establish themselves. In 1983, the John Howard Society of BC moved its head office to Victoria and acts as an umbrella organization for the various independent John Howard Societies operating throughout Briitsh Columbia.
The fonds consists of the records of the Mid-Island Diversion Programme, Nanaimo Area which the John Howard Society of Nanaimo has operated since December, 1975. The records consist of ca. 3000 case files that contain a personal information sheet, police record, runnning record sheet, letters of apology, general correspondence and closing report.

According to the agreement signed with the Society in 1987, the confidentiality of the material relating to specific individuals shall be maintained and personal names shall not be revealed. See the Rare Books and Special Collections staff for access procedures and use of the case files.
Johnson, Arne
Arne Johnson fonds. - 1918-1967.

Arne Johnson (Jonassen) was born in Kingsberg, Norway, in 1896 and emigrated to Canada in ca. 1911-12. He began farming in Saskatchewan and moved to Nixon Camp near Chase, B.C., to become a logger. Johnson became a leading figure in B.C. Coast loggers' organizations by 1928 and was a major figure in the loggers' strike of 1934. During his work career, he was a member of the One Big Union-British Columbia Loggers' Union, Lumber Workers Industrial Union of Canada, Lumber and Sawmill Workers Union, United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, International Woodworkers of America and the Woodworkers Industrial Union of Canada. He left union organizing to return to fall at various logging camps from 1936 until his retirement. During his career, his residences included Vancouver, Sointula, and Port McNeill.
Donation from family.
The fonds consists of documents relating to his career in logging, including membership cards in various union organizations; correspondence with Myrtle Bergren relating to her book, Tough Timber, on the history of the loggers of British Columbia; union correspondence, and minutes of some union meetings including a meeting of October 3, 1948 in which a motion was passed to disaffiliate the membership from the International Woodworkers of America and form the Woodworkers Industrial Union of Canada.

Derek Lukin Johnson was born in Duncan, B.C. in 1913 and
worked as a chartered
accountant from 1931 to 1973. Since 1974, Johnson has served as
Hon. Secretary and then
Archivist of the Sir Winston Churchill Society of Vancouver.
The collection consists of letters signed by prominent
historical figures including
Winston Churchill, Benjamin Disraeil, John Jellicoe, Robert Peel,
William Pitt, August-Norbert
Morin, and the Duke of Wellington.

In 1929 W.P.S. Jones became a member of a party under M. H.
Ramsay which was
assembled to inspect the West Cariboo Block for the Pacific Great
Eastern Resources Survey.
All areas on the Chilcotin Sheet Pre-emption map were surveyed,
particularly the Palmer
Trail.
The fonds consists of correspondence, notes, blueprint
topographical maps, and printed
maps pertaining to Jones' surveying trip on the Palmer Trail,
Cariboo District, B.C. Detailed
records closely document the history of the trail and its
surroundings as well as recounting
Jones' own experiences in the area.
Jordon, Mabel E., 1908-1993, collector

Born in Hartest, Suffolk, England, in 1908, Mabel E. Jordon immigrated to Canada in 1922 and arrived in the East Kootenay area in ca. 1937. A great deal of her adult life was spent investigating, reporting and researching topics of historical interest in the East Kootenay area and more generally, British Columbia. She was President of the British Columbia Historical Association for three years. She published articles in the British Columbia Historical Quarterly, the Cranbrook Courier, and the Nelson Daily News.
The collection consists of typescripts, handwritten notes, clippings, correspondence, maps, and photographs created or accumulated by Mabel E. Jordon between 1955 and 1972 for her article, "Kootenay Reclamation and Colonization Scheme and William Adolph Baillie-Grohman". In addition, the fonds contains information relating to Canal Flats, her presidential addresses to the British Columbia Historical Society and several other articles pertaining to the Kootenay area. Fonds includes typescripts and correspondence of William Adolph Baillie-Grohman and Florence Baillie-Grohman.
