Angus MacInnis was born in 1884 at Glen Williams, Prince Edward Island. In 1908 he
moved to Vancouver where he worked as a milk wagon driver and later as a conductor
and motorman for the B.C. Electric Railway. An interest in the trade union movement led
him to become business agent for the Amalgamated Association of Street, Electrical
Railway and Motor Coach Employees of America, Division 101. Politically active on
both the local and national scene, he was elected M.P. for Vancouver South for the
Independent Labour Party in 1930 and he served the same constituency as a member of
the C.C.F. (1935-1957). In 1932, MacInnis married Grace Woodsworth. MacInnis sat on
the C.C.F. National Executive from 1933-1950 and was Deputy National Leader of the
C.C.F. from 1942 to 1957. His awards include an Honorary Doctor of Laws from the
University of British Columbia and the Garnett Sedgewick award from the U.B.C. Civil
Liberties Union for his position on the Japanese-Canadian situation during the Second
World War.

Grace MacInnis was the daughter of J.S. Woodsworth, co-founder of the C.C.F. Married to Angus MacInnis, she has enjoyed an active political career, both
provincially and federally. She was party and caucus secretary until 1941. In 1958 MacInnis became provincial president of the C.C.F. In 1965, after her husband's death, she began a
nine-year career as M.P. for Vancouver-Kingsway. Her interests included the status of women, poverty and housing. Two biographies, Grace: The Life of Grace MacInnis by Sunny P.
Lewis and Grace MacInnis: The Story of Her Love and Integrity by Ann Farrell, have been written about her.
The fonds consists of correspondence, printed material, video and audio cassettes, photographs, notebooks, diaries and speech material reflecting the
political career and personal life of MacInnis.

A carpenter by trade, Norman MacLean was an active member of the C.C.F. in Saskatchewan. He moved to Vancouver in 1941 where he participated
in the Amalgamated Building and Construction Workers of Canada and in Credit Union organizations. He was a C.C.F. candidate for the position of alderman in Vancouver's 1953
civic election.
The collection consists of subject files relating to civic elections (1941-1971) and the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation. Also included are
approximately 100 brochures and pamphlets pertaining to socialism.

MacMillan Bloedel Ltd. traces its roots in B.C. to 1911 with the establishment of Bloedel, Stewart & Welch. In 1919, Harvey MacMillan, along with W.J.
VanDusen, established the H.R. MacMillan Export Company. Ltd. to sell British Columbia lumber on the world market. In 1951, the two companies joined to form MacMillan & Bloedel Ltd. The
merger made the company one of the largest firms in the world engaged in both the production and sale of lumber. The 1960 amalgamation with the Powell River Company made
the newly formed MacMillan, Bloedel and Powell River Company one of North America's largest producers of newsprint. The name Powell River was removed from the corporate
title at the annual general meeting of 1966 and the company became MacMillan Bloedel Ltd.
The fonds consists of textual records, photographs and albums from the early 1900's onward, maps of British Columbia, and items collected for display
purposes. The records of predecessor companies include series such as Powell River Company, Bloedel Stewart & Welch, H.R. MacMillan Export, MacMillan & Bloedel and MacMillan,
Bloedel and Powell River include series such as Top Management, Finance, Timber Division, Industrial Relations, and subsidiary and associated companies. The records of MacMillan
Bloedel Ltd. include senior executive papers which include the corporate papers of H.R. MacMillan, G.B. Currie, C.A. Shorter, C.A. Specht, D.W. Timmis, L.G. Harris, J.O. Hemmingsen,
G.D. Escott and R.L. Gillen. Also represented are the records of Corporate Research and Development, which represent the Powell River Company and MacMillan, Bloedel and Powell River
material. Smaller portions of records of subsidiary companies, particularly those who began operations early, are contained in the fonds. In addition, there are narrative histories of early
companies and wide variety of memorabilia associated with companies, people and places related to the network of MacMillan Bloedel Ltd.

MacMillan Bloedel. Canadian White Pine Division

The Canadian White Pine Division of MacMillan Bloedel Limited, located on the Fraser River in Vancouver, is one of the oldest mills on the West Coast and was the first sawmill owned and operated by the H.R. MacMillan Export Co., the predecessor company to MacMillan Bloedel Limited. The portion of the mill known as "B" Mill was originally built in 1923 as Dominion Mills and was purchased by H.R. MacMillan Export Co. in 1935. Like other large sawmills on the West Coast, the mill first produced Douglas Fir lumber in lengths up to 40 feet. Today the plant produces only Western Red Cedar, both rough and finished, for domestic and foreign markets. The Canadian White Pine Mill became part of Weyerhaeuser operations as part of that company's takeover of MacMillan Bloedel Ltd. in 1999.
The fonds consists of records of the Personnel, Safety, and Physical Plant and Maintenance departments of the Canadian White Pine Division of MacMillan Bloedel Limited, as well as some records of the Division's Manager and other divisions. The fonds includes administrative, personnel, project, and subject files containing correspondence, memoranda, reports, statistics, financial records, statements, organizational charts, brochures, newsletters, and other records. The fonds also includes many plans, photographs and slides and some artifacts. MacMillan, Harvey Reginald, 1885-1976

H.R. MacMillan began his career in the forest industry as B.C.'s first chief forester in 1912. In 1919 he established his own company, H.R. MacMillan Export
Company, Ltd. This was expanded in the 1950s to become the forestry giant, MacMillan Bloedel. MacMillan was very active in the community and provided funding and support for University of British Columbia
forestry and fishing programs.
The fonds consists of correspondence that spans the years 1898 to 1978, with the bulk of the material from 1930 to 1965. The fonds reflects the overlap
of personal and corporate interests in MacMillan's life. Correspondence regarding UBC, Canadian and foreign business and personal contacts, his relationship with community groups and
memberships he held, as well as his family history is included.

Noted lumberman and philanthropist H.R. MacMillan became Chief Forester for British Columbia in 1912. During his tenure in the position he created the
B.C. Forest Service. Soon after World War I, he established the H.R. MacMillan Export Company, Ltd. In 1951 the company merged with Bloedel, Stewart and Welch Ltd. to form
MacMillan and Bloedel, Ltd. Even after stepping down as chairman of the company, MacMillan remained very active in the business.
The collection consists of correspondence and documents belonging and pertaining to various figures and events in Canadian history. MacMillan assembled
the material from various sources.

MacPhee, Angus, 1917- , collector

Angus MacPhee enjoyed a long period of union activity, mainly in the Prince Rupert area prior to the formation of the Pulp and Paper Workers of Canada
in 1963. He served as first Vice-President of the national organization from 1964 to 1967 and Secretary-Treasurer from 1968 to 1969. The organization changed its name to the Pulp, Paper
and Woodworkers of Canada in 1971 and he became the business agent and national board member for Local No. 4. MacPhee served as national president from 1977 to 1982.
The collection consists of records relating to the International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers Local 708 (Prince Rupert) including
correspondence, circular letters, press clippings and publications. Records of the Pulp, Paper and Woodworkers of Canada include convention material, national executive board
minutes, constitutional material and correspondence. In addition, MacPhee collected a series of constitutions of labour organizations and collective agreements, primarily from the forest
products industry. The collection also includes correspondence, minutes and constitutions of the Western Canada Council of Pulp and Paper Mill Unions and of the Prince Rupert
Labour Council.

Manson, Alexander Malcolm, b. 1883

After graduating from law school, Alexander Manson became the first lawyer in Prince Rupert. In 1916 he successfully entered the world of provincial
politics and became an M.L.A. He became Speaker of the House in 1921. The following year he was appointed as both Attorney-General and Minister of Labour and served in this dual
capacity for six years. After an electoral defeat Manson returned to law practice in Vancouver. He was appointed as Supreme Court Justice in 1933. He served in this office until
retiring in 1961.
The fonds consists of three scrapbooks of clippings with a handwritten index relating to Manson's political interests and activities. The books pertain
mainly to the election campaigns and issues which consumed his time and interest as Attorney-General of B.C. including liquor regulation, Pacific Great Eastern Railway,
narcotics, game conservation and other issues.
Maracle, Leonard and Kitty

Leonard and Kitty Maracle were board members of the British Columbia Association of Non-Status Indians (BCANSI), which provided non-status natives
with a political voice to facilitate their upward social mobility and economic advance. Len was executive director of the organization from 1971 to 1973 and later became its treasurer.
Kitty was involved as its executive secretary. In 1976, BCANSI evolved into the United Native Nations. The Maracles were also active in other Native organizations. Len was public
relations director of the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs. Kitty has been president of the B.C. Native Women's Society and vice-president of the Native Women's Association of Canada.
The fonds consists primarily of records relating to Leonard and Kitty Maracle's term as board members of the British Columbia Association of Non-Status
Indians. It consists of business correspondence with the British Columbia Association of Non Status Indians (BCANSI) and with other affiliated organizations, minutes of meetings in the
BCANSI, proposals to the government and reports by Native organizations and government pertaining to aboriginal rights and political activity primarily in B.C., but also throughout

David Markson is a graduate of Columbia University where he obtained his M.A. Markson's interest in Malcolm Lowry gave rise to his master's
thesis which examined Lowry's novel, Under the Volcano, and then the publication of a book, Malcolm Lowry's
Volcano (1978).
The fonds consists of letters to Markson from Margerie Lowry (131), Douglas Day (20), Conrad Knickerbocker (13), and Peter Churchill (1). The letters
relate to Malcolm Lowry and his writing. The fonds also includes two rejection letters regarding "Through the Panama", and two handwritten poems by Lowry and one draft of a telegram.

Marriott, Anne, 1913-

Anne Marriott was born in Victoria, British Columbia. She began her writing career at an early age, and since the 1930s has produced several poems, short
stories, and radio scripts. Her poetry, in particular, has been widely anthologized throughout Canada and the United States. Marriott worked as a script writer for the National Film
Board in Ottawa in the 1940s, and later, for the C.B.C. in connection with the British Columbia Ministry of Education. Her poem The Wind Our Enemy (1939) was widely acclaimed. She won
the Governor General's award for her chapbook, Calling Adventures (1941).
The fonds consists of business and personal correspondence, manuscripts of poems, short stories, essays, and radio plays. The fonds also includes
scrapbooks, printed material, and some financial records.

The fonds consists of a record book of the British Columbia Institute of Journalists from the period of E.H. Scott's presidency of the Institute (1928-1929).
The fonds also includes various newspapers, some relating to Newsman's Club activities; as well as information, including a brief history of the Club in the 1950s and 1960s; seven
items pertaining to the 1930s co-operatives; and Vancouver memorabilia.
Mather, John

John Mather was a forest products pioneer in Ontario. He founded the Lake of the Woods Milling Company as well as the Keewatin Lumber Company in
1879. For twenty years he was active in various Gatineau Hill operations in the Ottawa Valley.
The fonds consists of correspondence pertaining to the building of the Lake of the Woods Milling Company in Keewatin, Ontario (1887-1889) and three
school exercise books belonging to John Mather (1837, 1838).

Mattison, David, 1950-

David Mattison is an archivist with the British Columbia Archives and Records Service in Victoria where he has worked since 1981. Born and raised in
Hawaii, where he received a B.A. from the University of Hawaii, he moved to British Columbia in 1972 where he received a M.F.A. in Creative Writing from UBC in 1974 and a M.L.S. from UBC
in 1978. He has published extensively on photography in Western Canada and was awarded in 1986 for this work an Award of Merit from the Association for Canadian
Studies.
The fonds consists of correspondence, design plans, computer output cards, and printed material generated for an exhibition entitled "The Vision Machine",
planned, but never staged, for the Vancouver Museum ca. 1979. The material in the fonds suggests that the exhibit was to deal with technological changes in photography as well as early
B.C. photographers.
Mayse, Arthur, 1912-

Arthur Mayse was born in Manitoba and moved to British Columbia at an early
age. He attended the University of British Columbia and then began working in
a variety of journalism positions that would take him from Vancouver to Toronto.
Mayse was a successful story writer from the 1940s to the 1960s. During this time
he sold hundreds of short stories to major American and Canadian publications
and published three novels, including Desperate Search which was later
made into a motion picture. The Mayse family moved back to B.C. and in his later
years he enjoyed a different kind of writing challenge, writing weekly columns
for various western newspapers and, in collaboration with his wife Win, writing
scripts for the C.B.C. television program The Beachcombers.
The fonds consists of correspondence, manuscripts, including scripts for The
Beachcombers, printed material and research sources. The papers relate to
his activities as a writer as well as containing correspondence of a personal
nature. The correspondents include William Morrow and Company, ACTRA, and Willis
Kingsley Wing. Two scrapbooks contain his articles and story clippings, including
a series on the Mt. Waddington expedition.

Susan Mayse, daughter of Arthur Mayse, has written several books during her writing career: Merlin's Web (1987), Ginger: the life and death of Albert Goodwin (1990), Earthquake: surviving the big one (1992), and Awen (1997).
The fonds consists of her photocopies of archival and printed material that she gathered in writing her book about Ginger Goodwin, British Columbia's legendary labour leader who was shot on Vancouver Island during World War I while evading the draft.

McEwen, Tom, 1891-1976

Thomas McEwen was born in Scotland and moved to Canada in 1912. A blacksmith by trade, he was active throughout his life in the labour movement and as a member of the Socialist Party of Canada and its successor, the Communist Party of Canada. He was also Secretary-General of the Workers' Unity League before its demise in 1936. Between 1931 and 1944, he was imprisoned for seven years for his communist activities. In 1944, McEwen began his career as a newspaper editor, first with the Yukoner and later with the Pacific Tribune in British Columbia. He also ran unsuccessfully in the 1945 federal election as a labour candidate in the Yukon.
The fonds consists of documents made and received in the course of pursuing activities and interests in labour and communist issues. Fonds includes books, correspondence, magazines, manuscripts, newsletters, pamphlets, press clippings, and reports.

Gerald McGeer, a lawyer and politician, was Counsel for the B.C. government in the Western Freight Rates Case in the 1920s. He represented Richmond
(1916-1920) and Vancouver Burrard (1933) in the Provincial Legislature. Elected as Mayor of Vancouver in 1934, he also served as an M.P. for Burrard (1935-1945) and was appointed a
Senator in 1945.

McGrath, Tom, 1927-1996

Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Tom McGrath had a long and distinguished career in the labour movement. He was active in a Canadian Seamen's Union strike in South Africa in 1949. He was a delegate to the founding convention of the West Coast Seamen's Union which replaced the disbanded CSU on the West Coast. After the collapse of the Second Narrows Bridge in Vancouver in June, 1958, he refused to take his men back to work, was dismissed by the International Association of Bridge, Structural and Ornamental Ironworkers Union, and organized the Canadian Ironworkers Local No. 1 and became its Secretary. He was President of Local 400, Seamen's Section of the Canadian Brotherhood of Railway, Transport and General Workers, 1970-1982, as well as serving as an Inspector for the International Transport Federation in Vancouver. He served as National Vice-President for the CBRT in Ottawa for 12 years and became President of the Canadian Merchant Navy Association in 1990. He died in 1996 after a prolonged battle with cancer.
The fonds consists of textual material (subject files, correspondence, minutes, financial statements, and printed material) relating to Tom McGrath's activities with the following unions: International Association of Bridge, Structural and Ornamental Ironworkers, Vancouver Local 97, 1955-1964; Canadian Ironworkers Local No. 1, 1960-1968; Wood, Wire and Metal Lather's International Union, 1960-1973; Canadian Brotherhood of Railway, Transport and General Workers, Seamen's Section, Local 400, 1968-1982; and the Canadian Merchant Navy Association, 1990-1995. Robert McKechnie was a prominent B.C. physician who eventually became senior surgeon at Vancouver General Hospital. He also lectured in medical
history at the University of British Columbia. McKechnie wrote numerous articles for medical journals and published a book about the history of medicine on the Northwest Coast. He
also developed the British Columbia Place Names project.
The fonds consists of index cards, engravings, notes, maps, printed material and documents from McKechnie's B.C. Place Names project. The fonds also
includes forty engraved prints related to the project, illustrating British explorers or events in the 18th and 19th centuries and a map of Russian discoveries on the Northwest Coast

McKenzie, James W.C.

Shortly after arriving in Canada from Great Britain, James McKenzie joined the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation in 1952. He supported the
development of the New Democratic Party and later served on its Provincial Council. McKenzie served first as secretary (1968-1993) of the Alan Boag Foundation, a non-profit sciety and,
in 1993, became its president.
The fonds consists primarily of records arising from a Boag Foundation-sponsored conference in 1983 based on the theme "Meeting the Challenge of the
Eighties and Beyond". Many of the participants were prominent members of the New Democratic Party. Other materials in the fonds include correspondence of the Constitution
and By-Laws Committee of the Provincial NDP (1977) and political educational material from the Canadian Labour Congress.

McPherson, Glenn

McPherson became a lawyer in 1935 but only practiced for two years before moving into the public sector as legal counsel to the Custodian of Enemy Property. In 1937, this position involved redistributing property confiscated during World War One, but by 1939 he was advising the Custodian on issues related to the Second World War. As war broke out, McPherson was also recruited into William Stephenson’s (the British-Canadian spy code-named Intrepid) “Security Organization.” As part of this dual role, McPherson was responsible for deciding whether Japanese-Canadians should be interned in 1942. For the next 2 years he administered the confiscated property of the internees. After the war, McPherson moved to the private sector as president of a series of firms in the expanding helicopter industry. At the end of his working career, McPherson returned to the public sector, this time in the transportation industry as chairman of the Vancouver Port Authority and a board member of the BC Rail Corporation.
This fonds consists mainly of records assembled by McPherson over the course of his professional career. Material documenting McPherson’s wartime activities predominates. The fonds contains two sous-fonds. One of these includes a scrapbook and from McPherson’s father, Ewan. The other contains research, correspondence and interviews conducted by Kay Alsop in the mid 1990s.

Geoff Meggs is a Vancouver journalist who began his career as an oil and gas reporter and wire service editor. In 1978, he was appointed editor of "The Fisherman", published by the United Fisherman and Allied Workers' Union. His special investigative reports on environmental issues, aboriginal rights and government fisheries policy have won several awards. He was appointed communications director for the Hospital Employees' Union in 1990.
The fonds consists of a draft of "Salmon: The Decline of the British Columbia Fishery", which includes footnotes that were deleted in the final version; sound cassettes and transcripts of interviews with prominent persons in the fishing industry and computer disks including various drafts of the book.

W.R. Menchions was one of the best-known wooden boat builders in Canada. Born in 1871 in Bay Robert, Newfoundland, Menchions found employment as a boat builder and a fisherman there. In 1896 he came to Vancouver where he soon established what became one of the port's leading boatyards.
The fonds consists of plans of fishing vessels built by W.R. Menchions for various companies and individuals including a seine patrol and towboat (1914-1915), cannery tender (1924-1926), seine boat (1925), and specifications and contracts for gasoline boats, seine boats and fishing boats (1914-1935). The fonds also includes one photograph of the vessel "Frieda" of the Kakiak Fishing Co.

Miertsching, Johann

Johann Miertsching accompanied the Polar expedition in search of Sir John Franklin in the capacity of interpreter aboard the ship "Investigator".
The fonds consists of a translation of an arctic diary kept by missionary Miertsching. He was forced to abandon his original diary with the ship "Investigator" in Mercy Bay. He later reconstructed it and added notes from the log of Captain McLure. The manuscript translation is of the reconstructed diary which was written in German.

Roy Akira Miki was born October 10, 1942 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He earned a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Manitoba in 1964, a Master of Arts at Simon Fraser University in 1969, and a Doctorate of Philosophy at the University of British Columbia in 1980. In the intervening years Miki married Slavia Knysh, the couple had two children, and Miki worked as a high school teacher and as a teaching assistant and sessional instructor at SFU. Miki was hired as an Assistant Professor at SFU in 1980, was promoted to Associate Professor in 1992, and became a full professor in 1993. Miki is a successful poet, essayist, and editor. He has received many awards, grants, and honours for his literary achievements including the 1991 Gabrielle Roy Prize for Canadian Criticism in for his work as editor of A Record of Writing: An Annotated and Illustrated Bibliography of George Bowering, the 1997 Association of Asian American Studies Poetry Award for his work as editor of Pacific Windows: The Collected Poetry of Roy K. Kiyooka, and the 2002 Governor General’s Award for Poetry for Surrender. Throughout the 1980s Miki was involved in the Japanese Canadian redress movement. Miki served as Chair of the Greater Vancouver Japanese Canadian Citizen’s Association Redress Committee, sat on the Council of the National Association of Japanese Canadians and worked for that organization as National Redress Coordinator and was otherwise involved in the redress movement as a researcher, writer, and activist.
Fonds consists of records related to Miki’s literary, cultural, academic, and political activities including writing, editing, and research projects, his involvement in the Japanese Canadian redress movement, his involvement with the Writer’s Union of Canada, and his participation in various cultural and literary conferences and events. also appointed Canadian Commissioner to the International North Pacific Fisheries Commission. Concerned about higher education, Miller served as Chancellor of UBC from
1975 to 1978 and received an honorary degree in 1979.

Born in Winnipeg, Jessie Miller worked briefly as an Anglican missionary in Saskatchewan before being posted to a church in Gifu, Japan. She worked largely with women and children, particularly the blind. Except during World War II, she remained in Japan until ill-health forced her to return to Canada in 1969.

Francis (Frank) Millerd was born in County Cork, Ireland. After serving in South Africa during the Boer War, Millerd came to British Columbia where he
first found employment in a Steveston cannery in 1908. Early in his career, Millerd entered into partnership with Captain R.J. Gosse, forming first the Gosse-Millerd Packing Company and
later Gosse-Millerd Ltd.. In 1924 Millerd established the Somerville Cannery Ltd. through which he purchased and constructed many canneries. By 1942 he had established Francis
Millerd and Company Ltd.. During his long career Millerd became involved in various fisheries-related organizations. He served as president of the Fisheries Council of Canada (1951-1952),
became a member of the Fisheries Prices Support Board (1953) and was appointed to the International Pacific Halibut Commission (1964).
The fonds consists primarily of records from Francis Millerd and Company Ltd. The fonds also includes personal material which reflects some of Millerd's activities
within the canning industry.

Noel Money was born in Montreal and educated at Radley and Christ Church, Oxford. He served with the Shropshire Imperial Yeomanry in the South
African War from 1900 to 1902, and with the South African Constabulary to the end of the war. In World War I, Money commanded the 159th Infantry Brigade in the 53rd Welsh Division in
Palestine. He became proprietor of the Qualicum Beach Hotel and pursued his recreational activities of hunting and fishing.
The fonds consists of three bound volumes containing photographs, clippings and memorabilia relating to Money's various activities. It includes
detailed listings of the type and amount of game caught during his hunting and fishing trips throughout the world (1884-1940).
These volumes also chronicle his military career.

Father A.G. Morice was a priest of the Oblate Order who served as a missionary to the Chilcotin Indians until 1885 when he was sent to Fort St. James,
Stuart Lake. While at the Indian missions, Morice invented a syllabary for the Dene languages and printed catechisms and prayer books in those languages. A prolific writer, Morice's
many works included histories of Western Canada and the Catholic Church.
The fonds consists of proofs of Morice's autobiography Fifty Years in Western
Canada (1931) and five letters to Dr. Robert Bell, relating primarily to Morice's

Blanche Murison, widow of the late Captain W.J. Holt Murison, C.E.F., is a prominent Vancouver club woman, social service worker, poet and writer. She
published poetry in local newspapers and composed poetry during World War II in support of the European Allies. Murison also wrote the lyrics to Vancouver's Golden Jubilee Song.
She has been very concerned about the effects of man on the environment, especially the damage caused by pesticides.
The fonds consists of five scrapbooks which include correspondence, poetry and clippings. Incoming letters (1921-64) thanking Murison for her
gifts of poetry and also include some poetry. Some of the clippings pertain to her poetry while others relate to pesticide control (ca. 1965).

The Murray-Latta Machine Company is a machine manufacturer and steel fabricator that over the years has specialized in fish canning machinery. The company began in 1919 in Vancouver as Murray-Latta Machine Works as a partnership between John F. Latta and James L. Murray. In 1926, the partnership became Murray-Latta Machine Company Ltd., with Murray as president and Latta as secretary-treasurer. Murray seems to have retired in 1939 and Latta continued as president and manager until 1955.
The fonds consists of blueprints, line drawings and sketches and includes a sketch of the "iron chink" dated 1904.
