The Congregation of Missionary Oblates was established in 1826. The first Oblate missionaries came to British Columbia in 1858 after spending eleven years in Oregon. By establishing missions throughout British Columbia, the Oblates laid the foundation for the growth of the Roman Catholic Church in the province.

The fonds consists of records relating to activities of the O.M.I. at Lake Okanagan and Kamloops (1860-1915).

The fonds consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence with Prime Minister R.L. Borden, J.S. Williams and other prominent political figures for the period of 1917 to 1918. The letters pertain to issues confronting the Canadian government during World War I.

Odlum family

From 1886 to 1889 Edward Odlum and his family lived in Japan where he was engaged in educational work. Odlum's son Victor was born in Cobourg, Ontario and came to British Columbia in 1889. He worked as a reporter and then editor in-chief of the Daily World. Victor Odlum served then as a member of the Provincial Legislature (1924-1928) and also completed a distinguished career in the military.

The fonds consists primarily of material generated by Edward Odlum (1850-1935). It includes drafts of Edward Odlum's A Dictionary of Classical Antiquity, references to the Israelite movement and material he wrote and collected about Japan (1888-1927). It also includes editorial cartoons (1939-1943) which were collected [by Victor?] after Edward's death.

An organization known as the B.C. Electric Employees' Association operated as an independent union from the 1920s until 1955. In 1955 it became, through affiliation, Local 378 of the Office Employees' International Union. In 1964 the International changed its name to the Office and Professional [or Technical] Employees' Union.

The fonds consists of B.C. Electric Office Employees' Association minutes (1921-1955) and office files (1929-1962); O.E.I.U., Local 378 minutes (1955-1964); O.T.E.U., Local 378 minutes (1964 -1980) and office files (1952-1978); office files for the various B.C. Electric and B.C. Hydro affiliates (1962-1978) and miscellaneous subject files. The latest accession consists of records relating to labour arbitrations between the Labour Relations Board of B.C. and Union employees.

Ogg, Norman, collector

Norman Ogg wrote to various cities, towns, villages and districts in 1979 and 1980 requesting information about the origins of their names. The study included Washington State and all of the Canadian provinces with the exception of Quebec.

The collection consists of leaflets, pamphlets, brochures, tourist guides, and various information packages about various areas in general, together with material about the origin of their place names and early history.

Olldym, John

As a community activist, John Olldym served a Treasurer on the Executive Board of the Carnegie Community Centre Association, 1986 - 1987. The Carnegie Community Centre in the east side of downtown Vancouver is a main resource serving the social and recreational needs of the residents of the "Downtown Eastside".

The fonds consists of the records of the Carnegie Community Centre Association's activities and reports for the period 1986-1987. The records include the Board's administration and financial reports and printed material from both the Centre and external social organizations - government and private.

One Big Union
One Big Union fonds. - 1920.

In 1919 delegates from most union locals in western Canada met at the Western Labour Congress in Calgary and resolved to conduct a referendum among Canadian members to determine if they would be willing to join a revolutionary industrial union to be called the One Big Union. By the end of 1919, a membership of 41,150 was reported in the 101 local units of the O.B.U. which included large parts of the mine, transportation and logging labour force in western Canada. Although by 1923 the union was reduced to approximately 5,000, it served as a pioneering effort for future attempts at industrial unionism. The O.B.U eventually became a regional affiliate of the Canadian Labour Congress.

The fonds consists of reports of the proceedings of the first semi-annual convention of the O.B.U. at Winnipeg in January 1920 and the second held at Port Arthur in September 1920. Also included are the results of voting in the O.B.U. locals throughout Canada and brochures on the goals of the organization.

O'Neal, Patrick
Patrick O'Neal fonds. - [ca. 1965] - 1975.

Patrick O'Neal was the western regional organizer for the International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers. Prior to his holding that position, he served as Secretary-Treasurer of the B.C. Federation of Labour. In 1973 he became vice-president and director of Area XIV, United Paperworkers International Union.

The fonds consists of correspondence, reports, scrapbooks and printed material relating to O'Neal's activities, mainly in the field of union organization.

Onley, Toni, 1928-2004
Toni Onley fonds. - 1962-2004.

Toni Onley was a well-known Canadian landscape artist. Born in Douglas, on the Isle of Man, he immigrated to Ontario with his family in 1948. After stops in Penticton, Mexico, Vancouver, and England, he joined the University of British Columbia's Department of Fine Arts in 1967 where he remained until 1976. He continued his painting of scenes in B.C., the Arctic, Japan, China, India, and other locations until his death in 2004. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1999.

The fonds consists of correspondence, diaries, calendars, log books, financial records, manuscripts, photographs, record books, galley files, subject files, sketchbooks, watercolours, and printed material available relating to his career as an artist.

Orchard, Chauncey Donald, 1893-1972

Born in New Brunswick, C.D. Orchard moved to British Columbia in 1920 to join the B.C. Forest Service after graduating from the University of New Brunswick. He served in the Forest Service for almost forty years as Chief Forester and became B.C.'s first Deputy Minister of Forests.

The fonds consists of subject files and sound recordings relating to the history of forestry in the province, which Orchard created while under contract to the University of British Columbia. Some of the files consist of research material he collected concerning hand-loggers, camp living conditions, and wages and salaries.

The fonds consists of records pertaining to the production of "The Way of the Indian", a program produced by C.B.C. in 1961. It consists of transcripts of the program and transcripts of recorded interviews gathered to prepare the script. It also includes three essays, "Reminiscences of British Columbia from 1862" by Charles F. Morison [n.d.], "A Recollection of the Early Days in Northern British Columbia: Steamboating by Steamwheeler on the Skeena River" by J.W. Morison (1910) and a preliminary draft of "The Documentary in Sound" by Imbert Orchard [n.d.].
