Sawicki, Joan
Joan Sawicki Fonds - 1944-2001; 1986-1999 predominant.

Joan Sawicki was born in Burnaby, British Columbia in 1945. The family moved
to Terrace, B.C. in 1956. In the 1960s Sawicki attended the University of Victoria
earning a B.A. in Education in 1968. She majored in both history and geography.
Sawicki was a secondary school teacher in Williams Lake from 1968-1969 and in
Armstrong from 1971-1972. Sawicki gradually developed an interest in environmental
and agricultural issues. She eventually worked in Ottawa and in British Columbia
for the Ministry of Agriculture and the British Columbia Agricultural Land Commission.
Prior to her career in civic and provincial politics Sawicki was a partner in
a land-use consulting firm, dealing with natural resource management issues. From
1987 to 1990 Sawicki served on the Burnaby City Council. She chaired the environment
and waste management committee and sat as a municipal representative on both the
Greater Vancouver Regional District waste management committee and the Metropolitan
Board of Health. Sawicki also served as the director of the International Centre
for Sustainable Cities. In 1985 she was nominated to run for the New Democratic
Party for the riding of Burnaby-Willingdon in the 1986 provincial election. Although
she was defeated in 1986, Sawicki ran again winning the same riding in 1991 and
1996. She served as MLA for Burnaby-Willingdon from 1991 - 2001. Sawicki was elected
speaker of the Legislative Assembly in March 1992, serving for two years. She
then served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Municipal Affairs from
April 1994 to May 1996 before assuming the same position for the Minister of Environment,
Lands and Parks from June 1996 to January 1998. She eventually resigned from her
position over issues concerning a proposed land development project that was to
take place on protected land under the Agricultural Land Reserve at Six Mile Ranch
near Kamloops. From July 1999 to November 2000 Sawicki served as Minister of Environment,
Lands, and Parks. Sawicki currently lives with her husband, Gary Runka, near Hagensborg,
B.C.

Scantland, Anna Cecile, 1931-

Anna Scantland was born in Saskatchewan. In 1955 she received
her B.A. at the University of British
Columbia and then married Erik Lund. Her experience working at the
Hastings Community Centre, Vancouver,
B.C. sparked her interest in the problems of minority and immigrant
peoples. She returned later to UBC to obtain
her teaching certificate and began her teaching career in 1959.
The fonds consists of a personal scrapbook, a university
degree certificate, the manuscript of her novel
Resignation (Shikataganai), correspondence, clippings
on the subject of women,
Japanese-Canadians and other ethnic groups, and printed material
relating to several courses which she took. The
fonds also includes two binders of material on guidelines for
novel-writing and descriptive cataloguing, a
dramatized version of her novel as well as her M.A. projects.
Scott, Jack, 1910-
Jack Scott fonds. - 1900-1976.

Born in Belfast, Ireland, Jack Scott came to Canada during his
teens. In the early 1930s he joined the
Communist Party of Canada and assumed an active role in party
organization. The C.P.C. expelled him in 1962
after his outspoken opposition to what he believed to be the
party's movement away from the revolutionary
Marxist-Leninist principles. Scott then founded the Vancouver-based
Progressive Workers' Movement.
The fonds consists of printed material which, in addition to
manuscripts and research notes relating to
socialist and labor movements, includes serials, leaflets,
monographs, and pamphlets, as well as Jack Scott's own
publications. The fonds also includes a transcript of "Jack Scott:
S.F.U. Panel on Canadian Bolshevism".
Scott, R.W., 1916-2001

R.W. "Dick" Scott is a prominent member of the forest products
industry in British Columbia. In the 1960s
he founded the Vancouver firm of Barnett Lumber Industries Ltd.
that was involved in logging, manufacturing,
wholesaling, and world export. He later founded R.W. Scott
Industries, Pac-Deck Sales Ltd., and Scott Forest
Products Ltd. His lumber interests led him into the membership of
the International Concatenated Order of
Hoo-Hoo that was devoted to the interests of the lumber industry
and to promoting the use of forest products. He
was initiated in the Vancouver Hoo-Hoo Club in 1951 and became
President of the Club in 1955 and the
International Order in 1959. As President, he initiated an
international wood promotion campaign in 1960. He has
continued his involvement in the organization.
The fonds consists of records of the Vancouver Hoo-Hoo Club
No. 48 and the International Concatenated
Order of the Hoo-Hoo and the records of Scott's participation in
these organizations. It includes correspondence,
financial records, minutes, photographs, printed material and
related material. In addition, Scott compiled notes
and lists on lumber retailers, wholesalers, forestry manufacturing
units, and lumber exporters as well as a
collection of rules for the grading and dressing of lumber,
1922-1970.

As a diplomat, S.M. Scott represented Canada in London,
Berlin, New Delhi, Tokyo and Karachi. He
attended three General Assemblies of the United Nations (1943-1963)
and taught at the University of
Michigan.

drafts, speeches, memos, photographs and
subject files relating to S.M. Scott's academic and diplomatic
careers, as well as military service during World War
I. Documents on the Scott family history are also included.

S.D. Scott was born in Westbrook, Nova Scotia where he lived
on a farm until beginning his apprenticeship
as a ship's blacksmith. He attended Dalhousie University for a
year, but he was forced to return to work
periodically as a blacksmith while also working on the college
paper. In 1876 Scott completed his M.A. and became
editor of the Sackville Post. He edited newspapers in
Halifax and St. John for 25 years. In 1909 Scott came
to Vancouver to work until 1917 on the News-Advertiser.
The fonds consists of material pertaining to Scott's career as
a newspaper editor, as well as material
relating to his political, educational and literary endeavours and
interests. Included are biographical materials,
incoming and outgoing letters (1838-1923), subject files, articles
and essays by Scott (1875-1922), ephemera,
photographs, maps and printed material.

The history of Seaboard Lumber Company and Seaboard Shipping
Company dates back to 1919. At this
time thirty saw mills joined together to form the Associated Timber
Exporters of British Columbia Ltd. (Astexo).
The organization provided a cooperative clearinghouse for its
members in the sale of lumber to Vancouver
wholesalers and exporters. In 1928 Astexo formed a subsidiary,
Seaboard Lumber Sales Company, to market British
Columbia lumber on the international market, and later established
the Seaboard Shipping Company to transport
the lumber. John Humbird of Victoria Lumber and Manufacturing in
Chemainus, B.C. served as president of the
company from 1935 to 1946.
The fonds consists of corporate records, a research collection
of Seaboard historical material used in the
preparation of a corporate history, John A. Humbird's journals of
his overseas trips for Seaboard (1937-1945) and a photograph collection.

Semlin, C.A. (Charles Augustus),

C.A. Semlin was born in Barrie, Upper Canada. He travelled to
the west coast to seek his fortune in the gold
fields in 1862. Although unsuccessful in this endeavour, Semlin
remained in British Columbia as a farm hand. He
was later hired to operate Cornwall Ranch and also the hotel, the
Wayside House. He served as a Member of the
Legislative Assembly from 1882 to 1900. In 1894 he became leader of
the opposition, and he was called upon to
form a government in 1898.
The fonds consists of a letterpress copybook containing his
outgoing letters as Premier of British Columbia
(1898-1900), as well as financial records, correspondence and other
material relating to the Dominion Ranch,
Semlin and Stuart and the Interior Stock Raisers' Association
(1870-1918).

The Service, Office and Retail Workers Union of Canada was
founded as a predominantly female union
in British Columbia in 1972. It targetted office, restaurant and
bank workers achieving some success. It gained
local notoriety in 1978 as the union behind the controversial
Muckamuck Restaurant workers' strike which lasted
two years. SORWUC took a very active interest in all feminist
issues, as is reflected in the fonds. The union
disbanded in 1986.
The fonds consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence on
union activities with a variety of
organizations, including correspondence specifically concerned with
companies like Distacom Ltd. and Bobolink Daycare where SORWUC was certified.

The Service, Office and Retail Workers Union of Canada emerged
out of the women's movement in British
Columbia. It was formally established in 1972 and its members
sought to organize in those occupations primarily
staffed by women. Local No. 4 was originally founded as Local 2 of
SORWUC in 1972 and became part of the
United Bank Workers Section of SORWUC in 1976. In 1981 the Local
was chartered as Service, Office and Retail
Workers Union of Canada, Local No. 4, Bank and Finance Workers.
The fonds consists of correspondence, contracts and
agreements, reports, financial records and a research
collection of printed materials.

Shadbolt, Doris, 1918-2003

Born in Preston Ontario, Doris Shadbolt pursued and enjoyed a life-long interest in the arts, having studied Fine Arts at the University of Toronto before beginning her career as a research assistant at the Gallery of Ontario (1942-1943), the National Gallery of Canada (1943-1945) and the Metropolitan Museum in New York (1948-1949). In 1950 Shadbolt was employed by the Vancouver Art Gallery, where for over twenty-five years she was educator, curator, and Associate Director. Through her activities and exhibitions, she had a major impact on the formation of a West Coast identity founded on Emily Carr and First Nations work. Exhibitions of note staged durng her tenure at the Vancouver Art Gallery include Arts of the Raven (1967), Sculpture of the Inuit (1969), and Emily Carr: A Centennial Exhibition (1971). She received the Order of Canada in 1976. Doris Shadbolt died on December 22, 2003.
The fonds consists of journals, worksheets, photographs, corresondence, and printed material, including exhibition catalogues reflecting Doris Shadbolt's research and publishing activities into the life and works of Emily Carr. The final accrual in 2010 contains further documentation related to her activities as a writer and researcher, curator of the Vancouver Art Gallery, active participant in the local, national and international artistic community, lecture and guest speaker. The fonds includes correspondences, notebooks, calendars, lecture and speaking notes, research notes, articles and other collected materials related to Shadbolt's independent research on a variety of topics related to local, national and international art and artists, annotated books, photographs and sound recordings.

Jack Shadbolt was born in England and emigrated to Victoria,
B.C. In the 1930s he taught art in the public
schools in B.C., and later studied art in London and Paris. He
began teaching at the Vancouver School of Art in
the 1940s, and at the same time pursued the development of his own
painting and writing. In 1948 he attended
the Art Students' League in New York where he developed his
interest in abstract modern art. Shadbolt taught
many art workshops, and travelled widely throughout the world. His
art is held in many Canadian public
buildings and galleries, and corporate and private North American
collections, and has been shown in many international exhibitions.
The fonds consists of Shadbolt's private journals, notebooks,
lecture notes, sketch books from his work with
the Art Students' League of New York, 1948-1949 as well as 6 sketch
books from the 1960s, a collection of his loose
drawings and studies, an extensive collection of photographs of
Shadbolt's paintings, including colour
transparencies, slides of a photographic work entitled "Year",
family photographs, personal and professional
incoming correspondence, his picture reference file of postcards
and magazine clippings, exhibition catalogues
and other printed material. Correspondents include John Macdonald,

Renate Shearer attended Ohio State University where she
received her B.Sc. in Social Administration in
1953. Shearer then worked as a practising social worker. In 1970
she became a community worker with the YMCA
and, in 1972 became its Director of Branch and Area Department.
From 1975 to 1981 Shearer served as Social
Planner for the City of Vancouver. In 1981/82, she taught classes
at the University of British Columbia in the
School of Social Work. Throughout her career, Shearer was very
active in social service-related issues, the
promotion of human rights and the abolition of racism. In 1983 she
became very much involved in Solidarity Coalition.
The fonds consists of correspondence, reports, notes,
speeches, minutes, press releases, clippings and printed
material arising from Shearers' career as social activist, planner
and teacher (1975-1988). Also included are records
relating to the Solidarity Coalition, human rights and the

Jean Sheils (1927-1995), born in Vancouver, was a founding member of the On-to-Ottawa
Trek Committee formed in 1985 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Trek. Together
with Ben Swankey, she co-authored, Work and Wages, that documented the life of her
father, Arthur "Slim" Evans. She was also involved in the Hornby Island
community, serving on the Co-op Board of Directors and several ratepayer boards.
The research collection consists of textual records, newspaper clippings, documents,
photographs, printed material, photographs, audio cassettes, and a VHS video cassette
relating to the On-to-Ottawa Trek Committee, On-to-Ottawa Historical Society, and
the publication, Work and Wages. Rough drafts, research notes and material, correspondence,
interviews, and Regina Riot Inquiry transcripts are part of her work in co-writing
Work and Wages. Also, the On-to-Ottawa Historical Society material covers the records
generated by the 1992 production of the On-to-Ottawa video, which was directed by
Sara Diamond and co-produced with the Women's Labour History Project. In addition,
there are files and photographs created by Jean Sheils to document the lives of Arthur
"Slim" Evans and his wife, Ethel Evans between 1920 and 1944.

Shepherd, Leonard Alex, 1897-1970

Born in Oxford, England, Leonard Shepherd came to British
Columbia in 1910. After overseas service
during World War I, he returned to work as a wireless operator on
coast steamships. In 1921 he entered the farm
machinery business in Surrey and Langley, B.C. After serving on the
Surrey municipal council (1935-1937),
Shepherd represented Delta in the Provincial Legislature.
Unsuccessful in his quest for a third term in office, he
returned to local politics in 1945. A devoted socialist throughout
his life, he fought against capitalism's corruption.
Although his main interest focused on agricultural concerns,
Shepherd also sought legislation designed to help
fishermen, veterans, students and the unemployed.
The fonds consists of biographical material, correspondence
(1928-1946), minutes, subject files,
clippings and printed material pertaining to the Co-operative
Commonwealth Federation in British Columbia.
Amongst Shepherd's papers are those of his wife, Dorothy H.
Sheperd, which relate to her work as an executive
member of the South Westminster C.C.F. Women's Club (1942-1959).

Sherman, Frank H., 1869-1909

Frank Sherman arrived in the Crow's Nest Pass coal fields from
Wales in 1903 and worked as a coal miner
and check weighman in the mines at Morrisey. After the organization
of the United Mine Workers of America
in the areas he became the first elected President of District 18,
a position he held until shortly before his death.
The fonds consists of documents, letters, photographs and printed material relating
to Frank H. Sherman and collective bargaining between mining companies in Fernie,
B.C., Crow's Nest Pass and southern Alberta and the United Mine Workers of America,

Shimizu, Kosaburo, 1892-1962
Kosaburo Shimizu fonds. - 1909-1961.

Kosaburo Shimizu was born in Japan. He emigrated to British
Columbia in 1907 and began attending
classes held at a Japanese Methodist mission. Shimizu entered the
University of British Columbia in 1915 and later
earned an M.A. in English Literature from Harvard University
(1924). He continued his studies and was ordained
as a minister of the United Church in 1926. He worked in Vancouver
through the 1920s and 1930s to build up and
reinforce the Japanese Christian fellowship. Shimizu devoted much
of his efforts to bridging the growing rifts
between the first and second generation Japanese Canadians and
between the Anglo-Saxon Canadians and the
Japanese Canadians. During World War II, Shimizu was relocated by
the Federal Government to the internment
camp in Kaslo, B.C. In 1945 he was transferred to Toronto where he
organized the Japanese United Church's work
in the Church of all Nations.
The fonds consists of diaries (1909-1961), notebooks, copies
of sermons and miscellaneous materials related
to Shimizu's work in various Japanese churches in British Columbia and Ontario.

Shimpo, Mitsuru, 1931-

Mitsuru Shimpo was born in Manchuria. He graduated from the
International Christian University in
Japan (1957) and then received his M.A. in Sociology from the Tokyo
Educational College. After his graduation,
Shimpo returned to I.C.U. as a lecturer (1959-1962). He then
emigrated to British Columbia and completed an M.A.
in Sociology at the University of British Columbia in 1963. Shimpo
then worked as a research sociologist at the
Centre for Community Studies at the University of Saskatchewan.
After returning to UBC to pursue doctoral
studies, Shimpo went to Japan to carry out field work. He
subsequently held positions at the Universities of
Alberta and Waterloo. Shimpo has authored a number of books which
focus on the sociological aspects of native
Indians in Canada and Japanese Canadians.
The fonds consists of correspondence (1960-1983), scrapbooks
(1970- 1977) and diaries (1962-1976). In
addition there are eight sound recordings (1971) with
Japanese-Canadian pioneers about their early experiences
in this province and the period of the Japanese evacuation during World War II.

Shiomi, R.A. (Richard Alan), 1947-

R.A. Shiomi, writer and amateur musician, was born in Toronto
and received his B.A. from the University
of Toronto in 1970. He afterwards came to British Columbia to study
at Simon Fraser University. From 1972-1974
he travelled the world, returning to Vancouver in 1975 to teach at
Langara College until 1976. In 1977, as a
member of the Japanese Canadian Citizens' Association, he
participated in the Japanese Canadian centennial. He
was also involved in producing audio-visual material about Japanese
Canadian history and the history and goals
of the Elizabeth Fry Society. From 1980 to 1981 he lived in San
Francisco but afterwards returned to Vancouver.
He was a member of the Powell Street Review and in 1980 he was
co-editor of the anthology Inalienable Rice.
The fonds consists of correspondence and writings of R.A.
Shiomi and material relating to the activities
of, and Shiomi's participation in, the Japanese Canadian Citizens'
Association. There is also some material on the
issue of the internment of Japanese Canadians during World War II.

The fonds consists of the Simson family tree, a history of
Calvert Simson typescript entitled "To Shear the
Dark Shores" (1973) by Peter Trower and Joe Simson, notes on
logging on Vancouver Island and the North Shore,
a typescript of taped interviews about Vancouver and various
personalities of the era before 1900, a typescript
of a taped interview by David Conn with Jim Campbell regarding the
Coal Harbor marine industry, documents
of the Simson (Calvert) family including commissions,
correspondence, indentures, other legal documents and
death certificates.
Sinclair, Bertrand, 1881-1972

Bertrand Sinclair was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and came to
North America in 1889. He began his
prolific writing career in 1902 when he sold an article to a San
Francisco newspaper. When Sinclair came to
Vancouver in 1912, his work assumed a West Coast orientation in
which outdoor activities, fishing and logging
played an important role. Pender Harbour became his home in 1922
where he continued to develop themes
pertaining to the relationship of character to environment.
Sinclair spent many of his later years enjoying pursuits
such as commercial fishing rather than writing.
The fonds consists of correspondence pertaining both to
business matters and to Sinclair's writing
(1905-1946). Also included are manuscripts of short stories,
novelettes and novels. Printed material contained in
the fonds includes short stories, poetry, novelettes and novels.

Born in Banff, Scotland, James Sinclair moved to Vancouver
with his family in 1911. He attended the
University of British Columbia and was awarded a Rhodes scholarship
in 1928. Sinclair was first elected to the
House of Commons in 1940 and he represented North Vancouver until
1958. From 1952 to 1957 he served as
Minister of Fisheries for the Liberal government.
The fonds consists of diaries, scrapbooks, correspondence,
photographs, speeches, printed material, and
memoirs pertaining to the university, military, business and
political careers of James Sinclair. Also included are
sous fonds relating to the teaching career of his father James G.
Sinclair and his wife Kathleen Sinclair.

After graduating from the Music Department of the University of British Columbia in 1953, Dr. H. Colin Slim enrolled in the graduate program at Harvard University and taught music at the University of Chicago, 1959-1965, and University of California,Irvine, 1965-1994. He has published extensively in the music field. The development of his Stravinsky Collection is explained in his Annotated Catalogue of the H. Colin Slim Stravinsky Collection, pp. 3-15.
The collection consists of more than 135 items documenting the work and life of composer Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky (1882-1971) including autographed letters, postcards, musical quotations, miniature manuscripts, photographs, programs and other printed material. There are items relating to Stravinsky's performance in Vancouver in 1952. The items are listed in an Annotated catalogue of the H. Colin Slim Stravinsky Collection available in the UBC Library (ML 134 S96 S54 2002) and a selection of them can be viewed online.

Smith, Ann

Alice Carr’s correspondence indicates that Smith was one of Emily Carr’s favorite summer guests. Carr was born in 1871 in Victoria, BC. She studied art at the Mark Hopkins School of Art in San Francisco (1889-1892) and then at the Westminster School of Art in England (1899-1904). She returned to Canada and taught art privately but, unable to make a living, she turned to other activities. Carr kept a boarding house in Victoria from 1913 to 1936, during which time she visited West Coast Indian villages to sketch.
The collection consists of six incoming letters, four handwritten by Emily Carr to Ann Smith (1936, 1940, 1941 and 1943) and the other two from Alice M. Carr (1945, 1953).
Smith, Evelyn Grey

in 1933 but later disagreed with the

principles of the Regina Manifesto. In recent years,
she has become a strong environmental activist.

newsletters, newspaper columns and submissions to various commissions.

Smith, John

During his time in British Columbia, Smith held many public positions. He was appointed Municipal Clerk of the Municipality of Port Coquitlam in 1899. In 1900 he was named Justice of the Peace for the counties of Victoria, Nanaimo, Vancouver, Westminster, Yale, Cariboo and Kootenay. He became a Police Magistrate for the City of Port Coquitlam in 1913. He was City Clerk of Port Coquitlam from the time it was incorporated in 1913 to 1937. In 1923 he became Justice of the Peace for British Columbia. He was the Stipendiary Magistrate for Counties of Vancouver and Westminster from 1933 to 1945. In 1989 Smith travelled to the Yukon and kept an account of his experiences in a diary, which was later published in the British Columbia Historical Quarterly.
The fonds contains 14 of John Smith’s diaries, starting on July 14th, 1892, and running until December 19th, 1949. (There are no diaries for the periods between March 1, 1901 to May 31, 1903 or February 24, 1912 to December 31 1922.) The first diary records his emigration to Canada and purchase of his homestead. The rest record daily activities and weather conditions relating to operation of his farm, the community, and family life.

originally incorporated as the Voluntary Health
& Welfare Association in 1966. Its name changed to the Social
Policy and Review Council in 1968 and to the
Social Planning and Research Council (SPARC) in the 1980s. SPARC's
main mission has been to draw on people
of diverse communities and constituencies to formulate opinions and
influence public policy in human care
development services and concerns. SPARC focuses on areas of social
policy through the work of various
committees and has formed special committees from time to time to
guide particular projects.
The fonds consists of Executive Board minutes and general
office files as well as correspondence, reports,
speeches, questionnaires, minutes and agendas, printed material,
and subject files relating to the following
program committees of SPARC Committees on Aging, Coalition on

Oscar Solibakke was associated with gold mining in British
Columbia from 1926 until his death. As fiscal
agent for the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company, he was largely
responsible for the successful promotion of
the company's stock between 1927 and 1934. His advertising efforts
and the financial success of the Company
helped to advance the Cariboo Mining District to the status of a
proven lode-gold region and played a significant
role in the "Second Cariboo Gold Rush" of the 1930s. Solibakke was
also active in promoting and directing several
other gold properties during the 1930s and 1940s, notably the
Cariboo-Hudson Gold Mines, Cariboo Amalgamated
Gold Mines and Pine Grove Placer.
The fonds consists of general correspondence (1911-1963) with
major correspondents such as William B.
Burnett (1927-1963), J.R.V. Dunlop (1927-1955) and Fred M. Wells
(1927-1941). It also includes Solibakke's daily
diary (1934-1962), and family records, printed and published

The Solidarity Coalition was formed in 1983 by concerned
British Columbians who opposed the restraint
policy of the Social Credit government. The People's Commission for
Social and Economic Policy Alternatives,
composed of four commissioners, emerged out of this Coalition and
held public meetings throughout B.C. in the
fall of 1983 to disseminate information and provide a forum in the
hope of creating a popular opposition.
The fonds consists of biographical information, minutes and
records of the meetings of the Coalition and
its steering committee, and copies of the reports, briefs,
submissions and letters received by the Peoples's
Commission of Solidarity in its travels around British Columbia.
The fonds also includes printed material on
various subjects (eg., economics, education, housing, health care,
labor, etc.), photographs, copies of petitions and
taped hearings of the Commission.

author of three books on his coastal experiences
to painting pastels of the B.C. coast.
The fonds consists of family papers including genealogical
findings and legal documents concerning land
owned by his family in the New Westminster District (Whonnock),
1870-1910; records gathered or kept by
Spilsbury on Spilsbury and Hepburn Ltd. and its successors in radio
communications, 1940-1985; records of Queen
Charlotte Airlines Ltd., 1946-1955; and a large collection of ca.
6000 photographs (including cartes-de-visite and

British Columbia in 1906. In Canada, she

Thacker Mountain was named) and they lived in
Hope until the end of their lives.

worked for the Vancouver Community Legal Assistance Society from
1976 to 1984.
The fonds consists of materials pertaining to Stanton's career
as a lawyer representing a broad spectrum
of industrial unions such as the International Longshoremen's and
Warehousemen's Union, International Union
of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers (Canada), International
Woodworkers of America and the Marine Workers and

John Stanwell-Fletcher and his wife Theodora were American amateur natural historians resident in Dimock, Pennsylvania. John had taken part in an expedition to Alaska in 1936 and in the summer of 1937, both he and his wife travelled to the Tetana Lake area north of Takla Lake in north central B.C. to study the flora and fauna. The couple spent a total of eighteen months in the area before leaving in January 1940.
The fonds consists of materials generated during the period that the creator visited the B.C. Interior. Fonds includes photographs, sketchbook, and offprint of articles describing the sojourn.

American Exiles' Association), was an American draft dodger during
the Vietnam War and now works in Vancouver as a writer.

be reclassified for the American military draft and his involvement
with the Vancouver Exiles' Association. Also
included are transcripts of interviews (1975) for the film Salt
of the Earth, concerning British Columbia

Dorothy Gretchen Steeves was born in Amsterdam and studied law
at the University of Leiden. In 1919
she married Rufus Palmer Steeves, an officer in the Canadian Corps,
and moved to Vancouver. She was a
founding member of the C.C.F. and served as M.L.A. for North
Vancouver from 1934 to 1945. Her many interests
included civil liberties, international affairs, nuclear
disarmament, protection of animals, women's issues,
abolition of capital punishment and the Unitarian Church.
The fonds consists of records chronicling the growth of
socialism in Canada and the formation and history
of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation and the New Democratic
Party, as well as with various aspects
of the issues of human rights and of peace and disarmament. There
is also autobiographical material and records

A.M. Stephen was born near Hanover, Ontario and he obtained
part of his education at Walkerton
Collegiate Institute. He travelled west and pursued occupations
such as cattle ranching and logging before he went
to Europe to serve in World War I. After the war, he moved to
Vancouver where he taught and took an active part
in the literary, social and political life in Vancouver. Stephen
was known throughout Canada for his literary work
which comprised two novels, four volumes of verse and two volumes
of plays. He also edited two anthologies of
Canadian Verse.
The fonds consists of records pertaining to Stephen's literary
work and his social concerns, including the
Canadian depression of the 1930s and the world rise of fascism. The
fonds also includes two scrapbooks containing
letters, clippings, photographs (including Norman Bethune) and
related materials. Another scrapbook (1928-1963)
was completed by Stephen's wife after his death.

Stevens, Homer

Homer Stevens was born on August 2, 1923, at Port Guichon, near Ladner, British Columbia.
He began fishing on the Fraser River as early as 1936, at 13 years old. He began work as a
full-time union organizer for the United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union in 1946, and was
elected secretary-treasurer of that organization two years later, a position he held until
1970. Stevens was known for his steadfast role in this union, as well as for his affiliation
with the Communist Party of Canada, and he was heavily involved in the fisheries on both the
Pacific and Atlantic coasts. In 1967 he was prosecuted for criminal contempt of court while
involved in a labour dispute in Prince Rupert, and subsequently spent a year incarcerated at
the Mt. Thurston Prison Camp in Chilliwack, alongside UFAWU president Steve Stavenes. Stevens
was later elected president himself, although he stepped down from that position in 1977, and
returned to the life of a fisherman. Homer Stevens married Grace, his wife of 54 years, in
1948 and together they had four children, a daughter named Barbara and three sons named Bruce,
John and Nick. Homer died in October 2002 at the age of 79.
The fonds consists of textual materials, photographs, slides, negatives, sound recordings and
memorabilia created and collected during Homer Stevens’ career with the United Fishermen and
Allied Workers Union (UFAWU), as well as in his personal life. The fonds has been arranged into
six series according to subject matter: Personal, UFAWU, Mt. Thurston Prison Camp, Printed Materials,
Ephemera and Memorabilia, and Newspaper Clippings.

Stickney, John Moses (Jack),

Jack Stickney was born in the United States and moved to
Canada in 1913. He worked in the Fraser River
Canyon area. He joined the 101st Edmonton Fusiliers in 1914, and
trained at Aldershot on Salisbury Plain in
England as part of the first Canadian contingent. He served in
France and was killed in action in Belgium in 1915.
The fonds consists of letters written by Stickney to his
family and friends during his service as a soldier
in World War I. The fonds also includes his diary, clippings, post
cards and photographs. Many of Stickney's letters
were retyped by his family and these copies are also included.

Lee Straight was born in 1915 and passed away in 2004. He spent much of his career as an outdoors journalist for the Vancouver Sun. In the course of this work, Straight developed a long-term relationship with the famous Vancouver Island angler and writer Roderick Haig-Brown.
This fonds consists of a scrapbook of material about the writer, fly-fisher and conservationist Roderick Haig-Brown. A major section of the scrapbook is an ongoing correspondence between Straight and Haig-Brown regarding fishing and conservation issues on Vancouver Island.

Peter Stursberg was born in August 1913 in China. He began his career as a journalist in Victoria, and was later a correspondent during World War II and a member of the Parliamentary Press Gallery in Ottawa. He also wrote numerous memoirs and biographies of Canadian political figures.
The fonds consists of records generated in the course of research for the biographies of John Diefenbaker and Lester B. Pearson. Interviewees include Donald Cameron, Jack Davis, Grace MacInnis, Stuart Keate, Norman McKenzie and Harold Winch. Boston, Mass. in 1852 and developed an interest in Northwest Coast
Indian culture that is reflected in many
aspects of the records. Throughout his life at Neah Bay and Port
Townsend he served as Notary Public and Judge,
Pilot Commissioner, Hawaiian Consul, Collector of Customs, and
Collector for the Smithsonian Institute and the
U.S. Commission of Fish and Fisheries.
The fonds consists of extensive correspondence that reflects
Swan's personal life and professional work
as collector of Indian artifacts, as well as several cashbooks,
estate records and miscellaneous items. The fonds also
includes the official records of Swan's work as Notary Public, U.S.
Commissioner, Pilot Commissioner, Hawaiian
Consul, and Commissioner of Oregon.

Engineer W.G. Swan played a significant role in the design and
construction of bridges, railways and
harbour works for more than six decades in British Columbia. He was
born in Kincardine, Ontario and graduated
from the University of Toronto in 1906. He joined Canadian National
Railways as an engineer and came to British
Columbia. After serving overseas during World War I, Swan returned
to B.C. and established his own consulting
firm. His firm was retained to work on the Patullo Bridge (1938)
and the Lion's Gate Bridge (1939). In 1945 Swan
entered into partnership with H.A. Rhodes and Hiram Wooster.
The fonds consists of photographs, documents and unpublished
material relating to Swan's career and
achievements, to the construction of light railways overseas during
World War I, and to the construction of
bridges, grain elevators, railway branch lines and other facilities
in British Columbia.

The fonds consists of correspondence, research papers, printed
material, sound recordings, and drafts of
manuscripts collected or created by her in writing a biography of
Tom Berger entitled, Hard Choices.

Swiftsure (Ship)

H.M.S. Swiftsure, commanded by Captain R.C. Aitchison, was a
part of expeditions commanded by Admiral Algernon McLellan Lyons.
The fonds consists of logs kept by F.A. Hodge (1883-1885) and
C.F. Henderson (1882-1884) aboard H.M.S. Swiftsure.
