
Critic and essayist, Raleigh was a professor of modern literature at the University College of Liverpool in 1889 and professor of English language and literature at Glasgow University in 1900. He was the first holder of a new chair of English Literature at Oxford and a fellow of Magdalen College, 1904. Sir Walter Raleigh was knighted in 1911 (11).
