To communicate and provide guidelines on the copying policies and procedures in Rare Books and Special Collections (RBSC), and University Archives (UA).
RBSC, and UA at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Library, provide copying services to UBC faculty, students, and staff and persons unaffiliated with UBC who make in-person requests for reproduction services.
UBC-affiliated users who are unable to come in-person to RBSC, or UA should request materials through UBC Document Delivery
Non-UBC users unable to come, in-person, to RBSC, or UA to make photocopy requests should request materials through UBC Interlibrary loan
Researchers should make written requests for permission to copy and/or publish materials (e.g. books, manuscripts, journal articles, maps, etc) in RBSC and UA. For detailed information on RBSC and UA copying services, please see Services. For information on fees, please refer to Fees.
Copying requests are to be approved by a librarian or archivist. All photocopy requests are considered on a case-by-case basis. Permission is dependent upon the physical condition of the material(s), copyright provisions and restrictions that may have been placed on the material by the donor or under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
For copyright and/or conservation reasons, it is not possible to make photocopies from the British Columbia Directories, photographs, newspapers, bound issues of The Ubyssey , or material printed or published before 1900. For items that may not be photocopied, it may be possible to take a digital photograph of the materials. For more information, please see the RBSC and UA Digital Photograph Policy and Procedures
Please note that photocopying of RBSC, and UA material is normally done by RBSC, or UA staff only. But, patrons are permitted to copy photocopied material.
