Welcome to a virtual display on the topic of Early Newspapers in Victoria, British Columbia. From a recently acquired collection of BC newspaper invoices dating back to 1858, we have created a virtual display. What follows is largely an account revolving around Bishop Demers' printing press based on Basil Stuart-Stubbs, "British Columbia's Peripatetic Press," British Columbia Library Quarterly 22, no. 1 (July 1958): 25-30.
On this web site, you will find an Essay that contains research on secondary sources related to early BC newspapers. The essay mainly focuses on the Victoria Gazette and British Colonist.
The actual exhibit was digitally photographed, and a PowerPoint presentation called Exhibition at UBC has been created for viewers to see how it was originally arranged. Given the high resolution of the digital photographs, it may require a few minutes to download for viewing purposes.
Only a sample of the scanned images of the collection is provided in Images. The scanned images have been enhanced to make them display as clearly as possible for the purposes of this web site.
Finally, a Thank You to the Lamb Endowment has been included as a way of expressing our appreciation for making it possible to acquire the materials used in the exhibit.
