These “gift” books compare poorly, in stylistic terms, with
the fine and private press printings- the mixing of photographs, line drawings,
Gothic and eighteenth-century type faces, and typically Victorian decorative
elements produces something of a visual hodgepodge. Such books were very
popular, however, and the fondness for medieval ruins demonstrated here
recurs in many other forms. The original albumen photographs on the covers
and throughout were laid in by hand.
