Kanchenjunga Press was founded in Bloomington, Indiana in 1972 to publish quality modern poetry by writers who were unknown or had not yet made a reputation for themselves. The Press endeavoured to produce inexpensive paperback volumes which would withstand many readings. The Press soon moved to California and expanded into the Vancouver, British Columbia, area by forming a co-operative agreement with a small Vancouver publishing company, Sono Nis, later taken over by the Charles Morris Company of Victoria.
The fonds consists of an extensive correspondence file dating from 1973 to 1978, as well as typescripts of poetry and the Indian Journals of K.S. Keys, poetry manuscripts by Dennis Lee and J. Michael Yates and published books of poetry.

Stuart Keate was born in Vancouver, graduated from theUniversity of BritishColumbia in 1935 and went into journalism, serving as a sportswriter for the VancouverProvince. From 1942-1945 he was an information officer in thenorth Atlantic and Pacifictheatres. After the war, Keate served as Bureau Chief of Time Inc.in Montreal and publisherof the Victoria Daily Times (1951-1964) and the VancouverSun (1964-1978).After retirement he wrote a memoir of his forty-five year careercalled Paper Boy that waspublished in 1980.
The fonds consists of records of Keate's career as apublisher of the Victoria DailyTimes (1951-1964) and the Vancouver Sun (1964-1978) as well asof his private life. Thereis some correspondence and manuscripts relating to his career as aLieutenant in the NavalService, 1943-1945, and Bureau Chief of Time Inc. in Montreal,1948-1950. Much of the materialconsists of correspondence, subject files, speeches, scrapbooks,audio tapes, photographs andmanuscripts for his book Paper Boy. Some prominentcorrespondents include: G.M.(Max) Bell, R.S. Malone, Bruce Hutchinson and Allan Fotheringham.

Crawford Kilian was born in New York City (NYC) in 1941 and grew up in Los Angeles and Mexico City. He graduated from NYC's Columbia University in 1962, served in the US Army for a period and worked as a technical writer at the Berkeley University Laboratories. Upon his marriage, he and his wife Alice moved to Vancouver for the remainder of their lives, with the exception of 1983 when they lived in the Guangzhou province of China teaching English. Crawford became a Canadian citizen in May of 1973. Since 1967, Kilian has taught in BC community colleges, published 20 books, and hundreds of articles and newspaper columns. His books include eleven novels, two textbooks on writing, a regional history, two books on education and politics, two manuals on writing, and two children's books. For the past ten years, Kilian's most prominent work in education has related to computers, especially distance learning and the internet. He has developed courses in Webwriting and his latest book is "Writing for the Web". He has also written a monthly column, "The Online Writer", for a Web magazine called Content Spotlight. Crawford Kilian lives in North Vancouver, teaches at Capilano College, and has plans for eight more books.
The fonds consists of the author's appointment books, manuscripts of both published and unpublished books, promotional material relating to books, and originals of columns written by Kilian. There are articles and other writings on education, science fiction and fantasy, cultural issues, the economy, the environment and technology; however education is the dominant topic. Writings also include early ones from the 1960s. Correspondence is mainly from the author's publishers and various agents, but there is some from associates, friends, and family. There is also material, including correspondence, pertaining to Kilian's position as an English teacher in China. Also included are radio scripts, interviews and presentations by Kilian. In most series there is both typed and handwritten material including manuscripts, drafts, edited copies and notes. There is also a cd which consists of Kilian's work in an electronic form. The fonds provides a comprehensive look into Kilian's life as an author, political activist, and educator.

Joy Nozomi Kogawa (nee Nakayama) was born in Vancouver , British Columbia in 1935 to Japanese Canadian parents, Gordon Goichi Nakayama and Lois Masui Nakayama. In addition to the honorary degrees she received from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute and the University of Lethbridge in 1991, Kogawa has been granted degrees from Simon Fraser University, Laurentian University, and the University of British Columbia. She won many awards for Obasan including the Books in Canada First Novel Award, Canadian Authors Fiction Award, and the Notable Book Award by American Library Association. She also published a children' s book based on Obasan, Naomi's Road, in 1986, which was later adapted for a play. She was awarded the Order of Canada in 1986.
Fonds consists of material related to Kogawa's writing projects, her participation in literary, cultural and human rights conferences and events, her involvement in community organizations, and her personal life. Fonds also includes some material accumulated by Kogawa's parents, the Rev. Gordon Goichi and Lois Kogawa. Koerner, Leon, 1892-1972

Born in Czechoslovakia, Leon Koerner was a member of one of the leading families of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He was educated at the Academie in Vienna, the London School of Economics and the Sorbonne in Paris. After serving in World War I, Koerner began his career in the lumber industry. In 1921 he married Theodora, a Shakespearean actress from Germany. Koerner remained in Czechoslovakia until 1938 at which time he came to Vancouver. He established the Alaska Pine Company Ltd. in New Westminster. Koerner relinquished his presidency of the company to his brother Walter. In 1955 the Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation was established with an initial endowment of one million dollars. Koerner served with the Foundation after his retirement until his death.
The fonds consists of two alphabetically-arranged subject files (1940-1965). It also includes records relating to parties and social functions (1942-1971), universities [primarily the University of British Columbia] (1940-1963), the Faculty Club (1956-1962) and Thea Koerner House at UBC (1960/61) and the Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation (1966-1972). Koerner also maintained two series arranged by personal names (1939-1972).

Ladner, Leon Johnson, 1884-1978

Leon Ladner was born in Ladner, B.C. He was educated in New Westminster and then attended the University of Toronto, where he received his B.A. in 1907 and LL.B. in 1909. He was admitted to the B.C. bar in 1910. Ladner was elected to the House of Commons as Liberal-Conservative member for Vancouver South in 1921, 1925 and 1926. Ladner returned to private law practice in 1930, founding Ladner, Carmichael & Downs. In the 1950s Ladner was involved in the debate over the potential diversion of the Columbia River and in 1957 he was appointed to the Royal Commission on Energy. An original member of the Convocation of the University of British Columbia held in Victoria in 1912, Ladner became an active supporter of the institution. He provided the funds to build the Clock Tower (1969) and endowed scholarships.
The fonds consists of correspondence, speeches, clippings, briefs and submissions, pamphlets, maps, addresses, copies of legislation, personal notes, memorabilia and subject files (1915-1969). The majority of the fonds focuses on Ladner's involvement with the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, Columbia River Power and the Royal Commission on Energy (1950-1969).

Ladner, Thomas Ellis, b. 1836

Thomas Ladner was born in Cornwall, England. He went to California in 1852, where he worked in mining and trading for six years and then travelled to B.C. in 1858. Ladner settled with his brother, W.H. Ladner, at Ladner's Landing, named for them because they were the first settlers south of the Fraser River below New Westminster. Ladner became involved in the farming and fish canning industries, most notably in the building of the Delta Salmon Cannery at Ladner's Landing and the Wellington Packing Company at Canoe Pass.
The fonds consists of a letter book (outgoing) pertaining to Ladner's activities as a manager of the Wellington Packing Company at Canoe Pass near Ladner on the Fraser River (1892-1896).

Lamb Lumber Company Ltd. was incorporated in Vancouver in 1912 and was liquidated in 1960. Thomas A. Lamb and family owned and operated the company throughout its life. The Lamb Investment Company Ltd., also owned by the Lamb family of Vancouver, was incorporated by Thomas A. Lamb and John B. Lamb in 1928 and was still in existence in 1963 when Thomas Lamb died.
The fonds consists of two minute books for the Lamb Lumber Company, 1912-1960, and one minute book for the Lamb Investment Company, 1928-1963.
Lane, Elizabeth

Elizabeth Lane was educated at the University of British Columbia and has long been active in community arts organizations. She is former president of the Canadian Conference of the Arts (1976-1978), Community Arts Council of Vancouver and the Vancouver Museums Association. She also served as the first chair of the B.C. Arts Board. Among other distinctions, Lane also became Chairman of the Commission's Advisory Committee on Culture and Communications. Established in 1980, the Federal Cultural Policy Review Committee evolved out of the Advisory Committee on Cultural Policy (1979).
The fonds consists of materials pertaining to the activities of the Advisory Committee on Cultural Policy and the Federal Cultural Policy Review Committee. Included are briefs, files, press clippings and committee publications.

Patrick Lane was born in a Kootenay mountain town, Sheep Creek. He moved to Vancouver after the death of his brother Red Lane in 1964. He began Very Stone House Press with Bill Bisset and a group of others in 1964 and then moved to Trumansburg, New York in 1969 to work on the New American and Canadian Poetry periodical. Lane has conducted numerous poetry readings throughout Canada and the United States and has been recognized with Canada Council Awards and grants as well as Ontario Arts Council Awards. In 1972 Lane was awarded the York University Poetry Award for his book Mountain Oysters.
The fonds consists of incoming and outgoing letters (1958-1976), including letters from well-known Canadian poets, as well as incoming greeting cards (undated), financial records, and memorabilia. Included also are manuscripts of poetry, prose (titled and untitled short stories), prose poetry, an unfinished and untitled novel, essays, plays and printed poetry. The fonds also includes a 1971 notebook, notes, reviews (1970-1977), photographs, drawings and printed material.

Lane, William Douglas

William Lane joined the Hudson's Bay Company in 1843 as an apprentice steward. He worked at Fort Garry from 1843 to 1875.
The fonds consists of correspondence, business documents, and miscellany (1843-1875) from the Fort Garry Hudson's Bay Post, which focuses primarily on the business conducted at the fort, such as trading and organizing supply trips to other posts.

John Langley married Edith Kidner in England in 1879. In 1888 they moved to Port Arthur, Ontario where they and their two daughters, Celia and Winnie, lived for a few years. In 1891 the family moved to B.C. where Langley worked as a farmer in the Abbotsford area until his death in 1919.
The fonds consists of personal and family records including letters (1891-1907), postcards (1905-1951), sixty photographs, household accounts (1920-1924), diaries (1915-1916) and documents relating to various activities of the Langley family.

Lauk, Gary Vernon

Gary Lauk was first elected to the B.C. Legislature as a New Democratic Party representative for Vancouver Centre in 1972. In 1973 he became Minister of Industrial Development, Trade and Commerce and created the B.C. Development Corporation prior to being appointed Minister of Mines and Petroleum Resources in 1975. Lauk was re-elected in 1975 and 1979 and acted as education critic for the N.D.P.
The fonds consists material pertaining to Lauk's term of office as a cabinet minister and as M.L.A. for Vancouver Centre. Included are ministerial and personal files, papers, memoranda and documents generated by Lauk and his Executive Assistants, Eric Green and Albert Mellul (1973-1975) and office files (1979-1982, 1984-1985) as well as correspondence files of his predecessor as Minister of Mines and Petroleum, Nick Nimsick (1972/73).

Leathart, James

James Leathart and his wife were leading patrons of the Pre-Raphaelites. They were influenced to collect Pre-Raphaelite paintings by William Bell Scott who was the director of the Newcastle School of Design (1943-1864).
The fonds consists of approximately 400 incoming letters from the Pre-Raphaelites (such as Ford Madox Brown, William Bell Scott, and D.G. Rossetti) and other nineteenth century artists to James Leathart and his wife. Inventory available.
Lee family
Lee family fonds. - 1895-1933.

After emigrating from China in 1892, Lee Thung (1878-1951) secured his first job as kitchen help in Victoria's Empress Hotel. He later moved to Vancouver and became one of the most prominent Chinese businessmen in the community. He founded the Lee Yun Company, acquired considerable real estate holdings and constructed a number of Chinatown buildings. Lee Thung also contracted with the fishing industry in the province to provide Chinese labour to the canneries. His son, Lee Kepment, became principal manager of the business until its demise in the late 1920s. After serving as a court interpreter, he became manager of Kam Yen Jan Sausage Company in the early 1930s. He was also prominent in Chinese Liberal politics.
The fonds consists of correspondence (1895-1933) and financial records (1913/14, 1921) which document the business activities of the Lee family, most notably Lee Thung and his son Lee Kepment.

George Leidy was a member of the Native Sons of Canada organization.
The fonds consists of union membership cards, government documents, union constitutions and rule booklets and a Native Sons of Canada membership card and circulars (1916-1924). Records pertaining to the Native Sons of Canada (Vancouver Assembly) include union newspapers, subscriptions, financial records and personal and labour related correspondence. The fonds also includes the immigration papers (written in Polish) of a young man and ephemeral material dealing with left-wing politics.
Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation

The Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation was established in 1955 by philanthropist Leon Koerner in his name and that of his late wife Thea Koerner. Leon Koerner came to Vancouver in 1938 and embarked on a career in the lumber industry. The Koerner Foundation began with a one million dollar endowment with a mandate to fund projects in the fields of cultural and creative activities, health and welfare and higher education.
The fonds consists of records chronicling the development of the Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation from 1955 to 1979. It includes applications, reports and related correspondence pertaining to the Foundation's activities.

The firm of Letson & Burpee was established in New Westminster but moved to Vancouver in 1895. The company produced equipment for the Pacific Coast canning industry, but during World War II re-tooled for the manufacture of anchor windlasses and mine sweeping winches for Canada's marine services. G.M. Letson held various positions in the company including President and Chairman of the Board.
The fonds consists of material relating to the business activities of Letson & Burpee, Ltd., machinery manufacturers and founders. It includes ten printed catalogues, correspondence (1893), and photographs and clippings pertaining to the machinery industry including detailed descriptions of canning machinery.
Lidster, Hugh Norman, b. 1888

Hugh Lidster was born in Lancashire, England and came to British Columbia with his family in 1902. He became a library trustee and involved himself in the municipal affairs of New Westminster. In 1925 Lidster was appointed chairman of the Library Committee and served on the Board of Trustees until 1960. In 1961 he became chairman of the board. Lidster was a member of the B.C. Public Library Commission for 33 years.
The fonds consists of reminiscences, clippings, letters and poetry.
Lindfors, Matthew Matson, d. 1971

In 1927 Matthew Lindfors opened the Scandinavian School of English; then from 1939-1954, he operated the Scandinavian film service. In 1951 he founded the Swedish Cultural Society. He also served as correspondent for the Canadian International Service of the C.B.C. from 1947 to 1959 and editor of the Swedish Press from 1933 until his death in 1971.
The fonds consists of correspondence, speeches, manuscripts, publicity material and photographs.

The Literary Storefront was established in Vancouver in 1978 as a drop-in centre for West Coast and Canadian literati. Under the direction of Mona Fertig, its founder, then later Tom Ilves and Wayne Holder, the non-profit society conducted readings, held workshops, lent books, offered courses and manuscript assessment services and published the work of local writers in several publications: The Literary Storefront Newsletter, the Birthday Book, Vancouver Literary News and Arts Guide.
The fonds consists of financial records, correspondence, sound recordings, photographs, subject files and related printed material pertaining to their activities such as workshops, readings, fundraising, and publishing. Most of the files relate to general administration, funding, publications and author subject files that include unpublished manuscripts.

Nelson Lougheed was born in Thornbury, Ontario and came to British Columbia with his family in 1889. In 1905 he moved to Port Haney where, with J.W. Abernathy, he established the firm of Abernathy and Lougheed Ltd. which operated a sawmill. Over the years Lougheed was active in both British Columbia mining and logging ventures including Greenwood Gold Mines Ltd., Allco Silver Mines Inc., Abernathy Lougheed Logging Company, Ltd. and Edgar-Lougheed Logging Company, Ltd. He also represented Dewdney as an M.L.A. in the 1920s and 1930s and served as Minister of Public Works and later Lands.
The fonds consists of business and ministerial correspondence, legal documents, the fonds of Robert A. Grant, a materials cost price diary (1927) and daily journals (1925, 1926, 1935).

Author Mick Lowe moved to Canada from Omaha, Nebraska in 1970. In addition to writing articles for Maclean's Magazine and the Globe and Mail, Lowe has written two books: Conspiracy of Brothers: A True Story of Murder, Bikers and the Law (1988) and One Woman Army: The Life of Claire Culhane (1992).

Born in England, Joan Lowndes immigrated to Canada with her parents in 1919. She was educated at the University of British Columbia and the Sorbonne. While working as a translator for the American Office of War Information she became interested in modern art. She worked as a freelance broadcaster for the C.B.C. in the 1940s and 1950s. Shortly afterwards she began her career as an art critic and over the next thirty years became widely involved in art criticism while working for the Vancouver Sun and the Vancouver Province.
The fonds consists of five volumes of newspaper clippings regarding art in Vancouver. It also includes some letters of Jack Shadbolt, 3 cassettes, and photographs concerning Canadian artists.
