It is an acronym for Tri-Universities Meson Facility, the huge atomic research lab in UBC. This particle physics research facility was built and jointly run by a consortium of three (later four) universities (University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, University of Victoria, and the University of Alberta) to work on research on nuclear science.
