Brief address by Mr. Thomas Fung

I am honored to be with you today for your commencement from one of the finest universities of the world. I am proud to be a former student of UBC; and certainly grateful for the Honorary Degree I am being awarded today. I like to speak from my heart, and tell you how I feel about life, work and friends.

I came from a wealthy family, but I also grew up in a poor environment to start with. My respectful late father was a refugee, he was struggling to start from ground zero, and worked hard labor to earn his living. That was the time we lived through it together.

In hindsight, it was the most valuable gift. I experienced the hardships of low society, so I treasure what I am possessing now. At work, I treat my employees fairly. I never stop learning. I really work hard to achieve my goals and I take extreme precautions to avoid fatal mistakes in business. This helps me to gain a better understanding of various perspective of life.

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings, but shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have more degrees, but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, steep profits and shallow relationships.

Upon graduation today, you all are entering the cool and uncompromising world. There is no black and white, no right or wrong, and there’s no definite meaning of good and evil. This is the time you have to exercise what you have learned in school and what you experienced in life, make good use of your IQ and EQ skills, to overcome the challenges you are bound to encounter in order to achieve your goal and win the prize.

Never lose the opportunity to give sunshine to the day of a person who needs a few encouraging words, and to those who mark your life, to those who made you laugh when you really needed somebody, to those who offers you encouragement when you are down, to those who look up to you for guidance, who need you at their side.

Life is beautiful, especially with a friend like you.

Thank You.
