Dates before 1958 are taken from Tuum Est and appear to indicate the date of election to or retirement from office; dates after 1958 are taken from the UBC Calendar and indicate the academic year in which each Board member served rather than the calendar year (e.g. 1978 means the session 1978-1979).
The Board consists of members appointed by the provincial government ("the Lieutenant-Governor-in-Council"), and members elected by faculty, students, and non-faculty employees. The Chancellor and President also serve as ex-officio members.
Faculty members of the Board were first appointed by Senate beginning in 1935, to facilitate communication between the two governing bodies. Since 1974, faculty members have been elected directly by faculty. In 1975, elected student and non-faculty staff representatives were permitted onto the Board. In 2006, a seat was made available to an additional faculty representative from UBC-Okanagan.
Under the original University Act, the Chancellor was automatically named as chairman of the Board. As of 1 July 1963, when a new Universities Act came into effect, the Board was empowered to appoint one of its own to serve as chairman.
